Detailed Guide to Fritillaria thunbergii Harvesting Techniques: Master the Right Timing and Methods
For Fritillaria thunbergii grown as a commercial product, harvest on a sunny day in mid-to-late May when the plants wither. Dig from one end of the bed without damaging the bulbs, sort the dug bulbs by size into grades and place them in bamboo baskets. First wash the soil off the bulbs. During processing, separate the scales while removing the heart buds, and carry out grading at the same time.
Select large bulbs (over 3 cm in diameter), split them open and remove the heart buds. The bulb scales are processed into "Yuanbaobei", and the heart buds are processed into Beixin. Smaller bulbs (under 3 cm in diameter) are not cored; they are processed whole into "Zhub ei".
When separating the scales and removing the heart buds, note the following: (1) Double-layered scales should be separated to facilitate sun-drying. (2) Do not remove too large a heart bud, as this may affect yield and quality.
Among the three grades of commercial product, Zhubei generally accounts for about 10%-15%, Beixin about 5%-10%, and the rest is Yuanbaobei. This ratio varies depending on how well the plants grew.
