Planting Methods of Fritillaria thunbergii

Fritillaria thunbergii is mostly propagated by bulbs. Seed propagation has been successfully carried out in Jiangsu Province, but due to problems such as an excessively long production cycle and a high loss rate of seed bulbs during summering over the years, it has not yet been promoted. When seed sources are scarce, the scales separated from seed bulbs can also serve as a propagation material. Cultivation of Fritillaria thunbergii can be divided into seed fields and commercial fields. In seed fields, after the aboveground parts wither, the bulbs remain in place through the summer; between September and October, the bulbs are dug up, selected according to bulb diameter, and then planted separately in seed fields and commercial fields.

(1) Bulb propagation: From September to early October, dig up the Fritillaria thunbergii from the seed field and select seed bulbs; for seed use, No. 2 bulbs are generally selected. No. 2 bulbs are selected when digging Fritillaria thunbergii. The largest bulbs are called tubei, with a diameter of 4.5-7 cm; the smallest bulbs are called zabei. No. 3 bulbs are a little smaller than No. 2 bulbs, but their quality is still good, and they can be used both as commercial goods and as seed for seed fields, while large bulbs and mixed bulbs can all be used as commercial goods. If there are not enough No. 2 bulbs, No. 3 bulbs can be used instead, with strengthened cultivation management. With fertilization, No. 3 bulbs can also catch up with the growth of No. 2 bulbs.

The standard for selecting bulbs for seed fields is a bulb diameter of 3-5 cm (about 16 bulbs per 0.5 kg), with tightly clasped bulb scales, plump buds, and no damage or disease. Plant immediately after digging. Other grades of Fritillaria thunbergii are temporarily stored indoors at a thickness of 5 cm. Crops interplanted in winter should be sown in time and harvested in time so as not to affect the growth of Fritillaria thunbergii; afterward, plant in commercial fields, and complete all planting by the end of October.

The suitable planting period is from mid- to late September to early October. Planting density and depth should depend on the size of the seed bulbs.

In the cultivation of Fritillaria thunbergii in seed fields, the spacing between plants and rows is mainly determined by the size of the seed bulbs. Seed fields should be planted somewhat deep; if planted shallow, the bulbs do not clasp tightly and the buds are easily damaged. Plant at a depth of 10-15 cm; large seeds somewhat deeper, small seeds somewhat shallower. Commercial planting should be somewhat shallow, otherwise the bulbs will not grow large. When planting at the edges, plant somewhat deeper to prevent rain from washing the soil away and exposing them.

It is best to adopt the shallow-furrow strip planting method: stretch a line across the bed and open furrows; open horizontal strip furrows on the bed at a row spacing of 20 cm, with a furrow depth of 10-12 cm. The furrows should be straight and the bottoms flat. To facilitate intercropping, plant the bulbs at a row spacing of 15-20 cm and a plant spacing of 13-16 cm. The planting depth is 2.5-3 times the height of the seed bulb. With buds pointing upward, plant one row, then open the second row, and cover the previous row with the soil turned up from the second row, proceeding in order. When placing the seed bulbs, the buds should point upward and be as uniform as possible. After covering with soil, tread it firm and tight. The amount of seed used varies with the size of the seed bulbs; generally about 400-500 kg for seed fields and about 250-300 kg for commercial fields. The seed germination rate is generally 70%-80%.

In places where Fritillaria thunbergii is newly introduced, to accurately determine the appropriate planting time, when individual bulbs are seen to have roots extending from the scales under moist conditions, it indicates that the planting season has arrived. From the perspective of temperature, planting can begin when the temperature reaches 22-27°C. No. 2 seed bulbs require about 6,000 kg per hectare, and No. 3 bulbs used as seed require about 9,000 kg per hectare.

(2) Seed propagation: It takes 4-5 years for propagation to reach the size of No. 2 and No. 3 bulbs. Seed propagation, compiled by Medical Education Network, increases the propagation rate and saves a large amount of medicinal material, but seed propagation takes too long, so the vast majority use vegetative propagation.
