Tainan Mango Purchase and Processing Program Launched by Mayor Lai Ching-te
Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te announces the launch of the mango purchase and processing program
This year Tainan has an abundant mango harvest, with production estimated at 105,000 metric tons. To stabilize prices, the Tainan City Agriculture Bureau set up a response team in late June to monitor production and sales and to activate relevant measures at any time. As the peak harvest period is about to begin, in order to avoid large volumes affecting prices, the Agriculture Bureau launched the "2017 Tainan Irwin Mango Purchase and Processing Program" on the 5th. Mayor Lai Ching-te also went to inspect the processor Hongyu Company. He affirmed Hongyu Company's achievements in the food processing field and also thanked the company for participating in the purchase program, helping farmers and stabilizing agricultural product prices.
Agriculture Bureau Director Xu Hanqing said that under the processing and purchase program launched from this day, a total of 7 processing companies applied, and the announced target volume of 1,000 metric tons had been fully registered. To encourage purchasing units, the Agriculture Bureau will subsidize companies with a price difference subsidy of 2 yuan per kilogram for purchases of Irwin mangoes traded at the Yujing Fresh Fruit Market in the city.
With this year's abundant mango harvest, the Agriculture Bureau has drawn up multiple marketing measures, including an international mango festival event, printing mango order forms and sending official letters to enterprises, agencies and organizations encouraging them to order actively, and arranging 11 nationwide stops to hold promotions in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi and other counties and cities. In addition, it has asked military non-staple food services, correctional institutions and group meal providers to actively make purchases.
In addition to domestic sales, export progress has also been very smooth, with traders in Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, China and Singapore successively receiving orders and shipping goods. The Tainan City Agriculture Bureau said that the current harvest progress is about 20 percent, origin prices have changed little so far, and the wholesale market price remains at 36-45 yuan per kilogram, an increase of 23.28% compared with the major production year of 2013. The Agriculture Bureau also called on the public, saying that this year's mangoes are of excellent quality and reasonably priced, and welcomed everyone to buy and eat more.
