How Often Should You Change the Water for Hydroponic Pothos? A Detailed Guide to Water Change Frequency

How often should you change the water for hydroponic pothos?

Pothos is extremely resilient and can be grown either in soil or hydroponically. Hydroponic pothos is one of the best indoor decorative hydroponic plants, a climbing vine grown for its foliage, with slender, soft stems and delicate, elegant leaves. You can place a nested pot high on top of a cabinet and let its trailing stems hang down gracefully, or after the trailing stems grow too long, loop and hang them into a ring like an emerald relief. Now let's take a look together at how often you should change the water for hydroponic pothos!

How often should you change the water for hydroponic pothos?

Hydroponic pothos grows relatively fast and is undemanding when it comes to care and management. At the beginning, change the clean water every 2 to 3 days, and after a week it will grow water roots. Once the plant shows strong growth, switch to a foliage plant nutrient solution and change it every 10 to 15 days. Normally, make sure it gets strong indirect light, and often mist the leaves so they look brighter and more colorful while also increasing air humidity. In midsummer, avoid direct sunlight.

Does hydroponic pothos need frequent water changes?

Hydroponic pothos should not have its water changed frequently. A pothos growing normally only needs its water changed once a month. Of course, if the water quality becomes dirty, you can change the water promptly to keep the pothos roots from turning black. When changing the water for pothos, you might as well rinse its roots first before putting them back in the water, because pothos has very high requirements for water quality. The fresh water used for replacement is best tap water or well water that has been left to sit for a few days. Clean water quality is the prerequisite for pothos to grow tender white roots.

How should hydroponic pothos be grown to do well?

1. Light: For hydroponic pothos in the north during autumn and winter, to make up for the lack of temperature and photosynthesis, you should increase its light exposure. The method is to place the hydroponic pothos in the spot indoors with the best light, or move it to a sealed balcony to bask in the sun at noon.

2. Temperature: When the temperature is low, open the windows as little as possible for hydroponic pothos, because the leaves may be frostbitten in a very short time. At a room temperature above 10°C, hydroponic pothos can safely overwinter, and at a room temperature above 20°C, hydroponic pothos can grow normally.

3. Fertilizing: In autumn and winter, pothos grows slowly or even stops growing, so fertilizing should be reduced. Before winter begins, mainly use liquid inorganic fertilizer, about once every 15 days. After winter begins, fertilizing should mainly be foliar spraying. The foliar fertilizer must be a specialized fertilizer, as ordinary inorganic fertilizer is not easily absorbed by the leaves.

4. Water changes: For hydroponic pothos, choose clean tap water or purified water. Frequent water changes are very necessary, generally once every two to three days, because pothos has extremely high requirements for water quality. Adding nutrient solution is what allows pothos to shine.
