Cultural legend of Baihao Yinzhen tea

Legend says that long ago, in a certain year, the Zhenghe area suffered a long drought without rain, and epidemics broke out everywhere. Beside a dragon well on Donggong Mountain there were several immortal herbs, and the juice of the herbs could cure all diseases. Many brave young men went one after another to look for the immortal herbs, but none returned. There was one family with three siblings, Zhigang, Zhicheng and Zhiyu, and the three agreed to take turns searching for the immortal herbs.

One day, the eldest brother came to the foot of Donggong Mountain. Then an old grandfather walked out from beside the road and told him that the immortal herbs were right beside the dragon well on the mountain, and that when going up the mountain he could only go forward and must not look back, otherwise he would not be able to pick the immortal herbs. Zhigang climbed in one breath to the mountainside, and saw only rocks scattered all over the mountain, gloomy and terrifying. But suddenly he heard a loud shout, "How dare you force your way up!" Zhigang was greatly shocked, and as soon as he turned his head back, he immediately turned into a new stone on that rocky slope.

Zhicheng then went to look for the immortal herbs. When he climbed to the mountainside, because he looked back, he also turned into a huge rock.

The heavy task of finding the immortal herbs finally fell to Zhiyu. After she set out, on the way she also met the white-haired grandfather, who likewise told her that she absolutely must not look back, and gave her a piece of roasted ciba. Zhiyu thanked him and continued forward. When she came to the rocky slope, strange sounds rose all around. She stuffed her ears with the ciba and resolutely did not look back. At last she climbed to the top of the mountain and came to the dragon well. She picked the buds and leaves from the immortal herbs and watered the immortal herbs with well water. The immortal herbs bloomed and bore seeds. Zhiyu picked the seeds and immediately went down the mountain.

After returning home, she planted the seeds all over the hillside. These immortal herbs were tea trees, and this is the origin of the famous tea Baihao Yinzhen.
