Three measures to deal with yellowing cucumber fruits in greenhouses

Recently, Wang Jian, head of the Ruifengyuan Fruit and Vegetable Professional Cooperative in Xiangzhaozhuang, Xiajin County, Shandong Province, called and said that this year the cucumbers really deserved to be called "yellow" cucumbers, as the entire fruit had turned yellow. After observing on site, the author found no disease spots on either the cucumber leaves or the fruits, which rules out the possibility of infectious diseases, and determined it to be a physiological disorder, mainly caused by poor root development leading to yellowing fruits. It is suggested that vegetable growers can take the following measures to deal with it:

1. Water thoroughly before planting

Many vegetable growers, for convenience when planting, tend to plant in dry soil first and then water. The drawback of doing so is that although the surface soil has sufficient water and fertilizer, it easily lowers the soil temperature, and the roots only develop horizontally in the shallow surface layer, which is unfavorable for the roots to develop deeper. If the soil is watered thoroughly before planting, it can induce the roots to develop deeper; at the same time, after watering to build up soil moisture, the greenhouse can be closed to raise the temperature, so that by the time of planting the soil temperature will not be too low, which is more conducive to root growth and seedling recovery.

2. Do not remove the lower leaves too early

The nutrients needed by the roots are mostly provided by the middle and lower leaves, so the lower leaves should not be removed too early, and leaf diseases must be strictly prevented and controlled to ensure normal photosynthesis of the leaves.

3. Fertilize reasonably to nourish and protect the roots

After applying an appropriate amount of base fertilizer, dig trenches at the planting site and apply biological fertilizer deeply, which can improve the soil, prevent diseases, promote new root growth, and encourage the roots to develop deeper and form thick roots. After cucumbers enter the fruiting stage, vegetative growth and reproductive growth occur simultaneously. When applying fertilizer by drenching, while ensuring the roots are not harmed, consideration must be given both to promoting plant growth and to promoting fruit development. Therefore, excessive nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied; instead, an appropriate amount of high-quality compound fertilizer should be applied by drenching. In addition, if the temperature is too high, the amount of chemical fertilizer should be reduced and more biological fertilizer should be applied, to ensure normal root growth and development.
