How can sheep farmers use the five-observation technique to identify sheep diseases?

The "five observations" technique for identifying sheep diseases

1. Posture. Healthy sheep generally compete for feed, move at an even pace, and respond quickly; sick sheep respond slowly, stop eating, and stand listlessly or lie down. Some diseases also cause sheep to show special postures, such as tetanus, which manifests as stiff limbs, and sheep with coenurosis show symptoms such as circling.

2. Body condition. When sheep suffer from chronic infectious diseases and parasitic diseases, they mostly appear thin and weak.

3. Fleece and skin. Healthy sheep have smooth, glossy fleece that does not shed easily; sick sheep have rough, dull, brittle fleece that sheds easily, and especially when sheep scab mite disease occurs, there will be fleece loss and scabs and even skin wounds.

4. Mucous membranes. In healthy sheep, the visible mucous membranes such as the conjunctiva, nasal cavity, oral cavity, and anus are pink, moist, and smooth. If the mucous membranes become pale white, it is a sign of anemia; if the mucous membranes are flushed, it is mostly caused by elevated body temperature and febrile diseases; if the mucous membranes turn yellow, there is an increase in bilirubin in the body, blockage of the hepatobiliary ducts, or hemolytic anemia, etc. If suffering from piroplasmosis, liver fluke, etc., the visible mucous membranes all show varying degrees of yellow staining. Cyanosis of the visible mucous membranes is seen in respiratory difficulty diseases, toxic diseases, and the critical stage of certain diseases.

5. Feeding and rumination. Refusal of food and drink indicates that the condition is severe; if the sheep eats but does not chew, the oral cavity and teeth should be examined. Healthy sheep have a moist nasolabial mirror, begin ruminating half an hour after feeding, each rumination lasts about half an hour, and they ruminate 6-8 times in a day and night; a dry nasolabial mirror and reduced or stopped rumination are mostly caused by high fever and severe inflammation of the forestomach and true stomach and intestines.
