Four methods for storing cauliflower in winter make preservation easier
1. Plastic bag storage method First use a thin nail to poke two pairs of small holes in the upper and lower parts of the plastic bag, then put the cauliflower into the bag. For large cauliflower, put one per bag; for medium and small cauliflower, 2-5 can be put in one bag. Then tie the bag opening tightly and place the bags in a dry, clean empty room, arranging them in a stack. Keep the room temperature at around 0°C. Cover them when the weather turns cold. If water droplets appear inside the bags, open the bags once a week for ventilation.
2. Storage by piling in a cellar Spread dry sand 6-7 cm thick on the floor of the cellar, arrange the air-dried cauliflower in 3-4 layers, about 1 m wide, and finally cover them with plastic film. When the temperature in the cellar drops below 0°C, cover with straw mats. After that, turn the cauliflower once every half month, remove diseased and rotten cauliflower, and ventilate in time to keep the temperature in the pile at -1-0°C. This method can store cauliflower until around the Spring Festival.
3. Low-temperature trench storage method In a shaded place, dig a trench 70-90 cm wide and about 1 m deep, spread a layer of dry sand on the bottom of the trench, then place cauliflower with 6-7 cm of root stem and 3 leaves retained at the top into the trench. Note that the first layer of cauliflower should have the curds facing up, and the second layer should have the curds facing down, arranged head to head in the trench. After arranging, the curds should be about 35 cm from the ground surface. Also check and turn the cauliflower. In the early stage, do not cover or use straw mats as a cover. After Light Snow, plastic film can be used to cover. Keep the temperature in the trench at around 0°C. In the early stage, protect against rain; in the later stage, sweep away snow in time.
4. Temporary planting storage method Dig up the plants to be stored with their roots, remove the old yellow lower leaves, and plant them with soil in a sunny cold frame. The planting density should be such that the leaves overlap but are not crowded or folded. After planting, water and cover with plastic film. On cold nights, cover with straw mats. Keep the daytime temperature at around 20°C, and do not let the nighttime temperature fall below 10°C. Also pay attention to maintaining suitable humidity. During the day, uncover the straw mats and ventilate to lower the temperature. Be careful to avoid pressing the plastic film against the leaves. This method is suitable for storing immature cauliflower.
