Symptoms:
The eggplant fruit is irregular in shape and remains tough without growing, namely stiff eggplant. In addition, deformed fruits such as cracked fruit below the calyx, flat fruit, and rough-edged fruit also occur. The main cause of deformed fruit is poor seedling quality, which is related to the seedbed soil and temperature, moisture, and light management. When day and night temperatures are both too high, assimilation nutrients are consumed more, causing seedling quality to deteriorate. If light is insufficient, growth and development are slow, and the period of flower formation and the flowering period are delayed, causing flower quality to decline. When the temperature is below 17°C or above 35°C, eggplant fertilization is hindered and pollen germination slows down. If low temperature is encountered at transplanting, even if pollen lands on the pistil, the pollen tube elongates poorly, thus forming deformed fruit.
Prevention and control methods:
1. For greenhouse cultivation, keep the minimum temperature at 14-15°C during the seedling stage, pay attention to increasing light during the day, control the greenhouse temperature below 30°C, ventilate in time, and prevent the occurrence of stiff eggplant caused by high temperature.
2. Eggplant likes strong light. When raising seedlings, use glass or plastic film with sufficient light transmission, which helps improve seedling quality, but it will not germinate when the temperature is above 40°C.
3. It is recommended to apply organic active fertilizer or compost fermented with enzyme bacteria, adopt formula fertilization techniques, spray plant growth regulators, foliar fertilizers, etc. to promote plant growth, and water timely and appropriately.
