Raising crayfish and growing pearl flowers: the road to prosperity of Zheng Dehai, a typical poverty-alleviation case in Huwan, Xin County

His name is Zheng Dehai, and he is from Zhengbei Group, Wubang Village, Huwan Township. Zheng Dehai's family has 4 members. His wife and son are intellectually disabled and suffer from multiple illnesses, and his youngest daughter attends middle school. Due to a lack of skills and lack of a pillar industry, the family fell into poverty. The family's main source of income was growing grain crops. By the end of 2014, the family's annual per capita net income was less than 2,700 yuan.

Riding the spring breeze of the poverty-alleviation campaign, Zheng Dehai's whole family deeply felt the care and warmth brought by targeted poverty alleviation.

Since 2015, with the help of the Party Committee and government of Huwan Township, the "two committees" of Wubang Village and the responsible persons assigned to assist, Zheng Dehai has raised Huainan pigs and crayfish, and grown pearl flowers, rice, peanuts, lotus roots, etc., increasing his annual income by 30,000 yuan, with per capita net income reaching more than 7,000 yuan. In 2016, he escaped poverty on schedule.

Wubang Village is a key poverty-stricken village designated by the province for poverty alleviation and development in 2011. It currently has 119 registered poor households with 403 people. In the past, none of them had a pillar industry and they mainly relied on growing grain crops and working away from home to make a living. The village's infrastructure is backward, the masses' awareness of development is not strong, there is a lack of effective sources of income, and the poverty rate is relatively high.

Under the correct leadership of the Party Committee and government of Huwan Township, and with the strong support of the county Education and Sports Bureau, the assisting unit, Wubang Village has taken advancing poverty alleviation and development work as the village's top priority. It has adopted an industry-driven approach to promote industrial poverty alleviation, with paired assistance and precision to households as the core, and has steadily and orderly advanced poverty alleviation and development work. The village has also produced a number of advanced demonstration households in poverty alleviation like Zheng Dehai.

While doing a good job in lifting himself out of poverty, Zheng Dehai did not forget the other poor households in the village. He always cared about their production and living conditions. His neighbor Zheng Quanyi is visually disabled and cannot take care of himself, relying entirely on the support of his frail and sickly elderly sister and brother-in-law. The life of the family of 3 is extremely difficult. The five-guarantee household Zheng Yefa is frail and sickly and relies only on the five-guarantee allowance to live, and life is very hard. Zheng Dehai saw this and felt anxious. He took on both poor households for assistance, not only providing them with help in daily life, but also teaching them crop and livestock farming techniques free of charge.

Under Zheng Dehai's demonstration and leadership, poor households in Wubang Village vigorously developed crop and livestock farming.

Although Zheng Dehai has already escaped poverty, he has not stopped moving forward. He also hopes to use the good policies of targeted poverty alleviation to expand his existing scale, so that his fellow villagers can all get on the train to prosperity and life can become better and better. In his spare time from farming, he sang the long-unheard rural folk songs.
