Build your own vegetable garden and let your kids experience the joy of growing from an early age
Vegetables and fruits are among the essential foods in people's daily diet, but the vegetables sold on the market today are all grown to maturity after repeated applications of chemicals. Add to that media reports of toxic vegetable scandals and the formaldehyde cabbage incident, and everyone is living in constant fear.
So I have always wanted to have a vegetable garden of my own. Though the yield cannot meet our needs, the process of growing lets me relax, and through my own hard work watering and tending, I can feel the sense of achievement when the vegetables ripen; it also lets my child get to know all kinds of vegetables and see how they grow.
Before, the conditions at home were not good enough, so I was never able to realize my dream of growing vegetables. After moving house in March this year, the new home has a terrace, and it faces south, so the idea of growing vegetables came up again, and I started busying myself with the vegetable garden. Now some of the vegetables are growing quite well, and the amaranth I planted has already been made into dumpling filling by my mother-in-law to wrap dumplings.
Now let's take a look together at how our family's vegetable garden was built!
1. Buy some large pots for growing vegetables and some soil for planting. Choose the shape of the planting pots according to the space in your home. You can also use foam boxes for growing.
2. Buy some vegetable seeds you like. I bought more than twenty kinds. The picture shows only some of the seeds.
3. Besides pots and seeds, you also need to buy some fertilizer.
4. Before sowing the seeds, soak them in warm water for half an hour first, which makes it easier for the seeds to sprout. Then pour the soil into the pot, scatter the seeds in the pot, and finally cover the seeds with another layer of soil. Cover the seeds with soil to a depth equal to their length.
After that comes watering and fertilizing, waiting for the seeds to take root, sprout, grow leaves, flower and bear fruit.
Here are some of the vegetables in my garden: cucumber, strawberry, cilantro, amaranth, mint, spinach, gourd.
If you also have a sunny spot at home, then get started right away and plant some vegetables you like.
