8 varieties of geraniums bloom like crazy in summer, and they don't die even at 40°C high temperatures

I've seen plenty of geranium flowers, but it's rare to see ones that bloom in all four seasons when grown. And those geraniums that still fight to bloom after enduring 40°C high temperatures are even rarer! Today I'll teach you how to help geraniums safely get through the scorching summer heat!

Which geranium varieties are summer-survival experts?

Large-flowered geraniums like 'Flame Red Lips', Lijiang Geranium, 'Charlotte', 'Deli', and 'Chocolate'; upright geraniums like 'White Star', 'Shan Gong', 'Diwa', and 'Rose Star Speckle'; and trailing types like 'Summer Rose', 'Snow White', and 'Nelly' all get through summer relatively easily, fill out their pots fast, and look beautiful too!

How do you care for geraniums in summer?

After the temperature rises to 30°C, geraniums will gradually enter dormancy. Actually, caring for dormant geraniums isn't much trouble either. The key is still root care. Just don't pamper them with heavy watering and heavy fertilizer, and they'll be fine.

1. Water moderately

In summer, geraniums need controlled watering, but you can't stop watering altogether. Water once every 5-7 days. Also note: don't mist the leaves frequently. Although misting can lower the temperature, if the water doesn't evaporate in time, it will rot the leaves and stems.

2. Provide shade

When the potting soil temperature gets too high, the roots are easily damaged, and direct sunlight will also scorch the leaves. So be sure to provide shade. At most 2 hours of direct sunlight in the morning and evening, and keep them in indoor indirect light the rest of the time.

3. Reduce fertilizing

In high-temperature environments, stop applying nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers to control plant growth and inhibit bud formation. Occasionally apply just a little bit of diluted potassium fertilizer to strengthen roots and protect the plants.

4. Ensure ventilation

Geraniums dread stuffy heat most of all. In summer, ventilation is a must, otherwise the roots easily rot and the leaves wilt. Cut off old leaves and dead leaves, keep the young and sturdy leaves, and place a fan near the flower pots to increase air circulation.
