Want high yields when growing Welsh onions? The first step isn't fertilizing, it's this

For farmers growing Welsh onions, the first step to high yields isn't how to fertilize, it's "this"

Yesterday a farmer sent me a message: "Teacher Fu, these past two years, whatever crop I plant, that crop loses money. This year I want to make a complete change. I heard that growing Welsh onions has been pretty profitable these past two years, so I want to grow Welsh onions. Everyone says that to get high Welsh onion yields and a high selling price, mastering the planting density of Welsh onions is key. Could you help explain the planting density for Welsh onions, what's more suitable?"

In fact, the planting density of Welsh onions varies completely depending on the variety, the cultivation method, and the product requirements. A reasonable planting density for Welsh onions can effectively improve their market quality and yield.

Today I can only introduce, based on some of my commonly used experiences and patterns for Welsh onion planting density, to the growers.

If farmers are growing tall-white-stalk type Welsh onion varieties, it's best to plant them sparsely; if they are short-white-stalk type Welsh onion varieties, plant them densely;

In terms of planting method, if farmers use furrow planting for Welsh onions, the density should be lower; if they use bed planting for Welsh onions, the density should be higher.

If farmers are cultivating small Welsh onions, the density should be higher; when cultivating large Welsh onions, the density should be lower; for small Welsh onions, those with a long growing period should be planted less densely than those with a short growing period.

These are the common patterns for Welsh onion planting density. The specific Welsh onion planting methods are as follows:

(1) Furrow planting cultivation of Welsh onions

For tall-white-stalk type Welsh onion varieties, a furrow spacing of 80?100 cm is suitable. The reason is that if the furrow spacing is too narrow, it is not conducive to earthing up the Welsh onions; if too wide, land use is unreasonable, affecting the yield per unit area of Welsh onions. Plant 18000?22000 plants per mu;

For cultivating short-white-stalk type Welsh onion varieties, a furrow spacing of 50?70 cm is best, planting 22000?28000 plants per mu.

(2) Bed planting of small Welsh onions

Common small Welsh onions are grown in flat beds by row planting or clump planting. For row planting, row spacing is 20 cm and plant spacing is 3?5 cm, planting 60000?80000 plants per mu; for clump planting, clump spacing is 20 cm, with 3?5 plants per clump.
