Taichung City promotes solar power installation, aiming to match 2 coal-fired units at Taichung Power Plant
Taichung City encourages the installation of solar photovoltaic panels. Mayor Lin Chia-lung pointed out yesterday (the 5th) that the city government's efforts to promote rooftop solar power generation on public buildings have already produced results. It will also cooperate with the Executive Yuan's target and encourage the private sector to install solar panels, aiming for 1 GW, the baseline power generation of 2 units at the Taichung Power Plant, with the chance to shut down 2 units at the Taichung Power Plant.
City councilor Chen Shu-hua pointed out in the council that she hoped the city government would be closer to the public's feelings. In addition to strengthening improvements to air quality, it should also promote rooftop solar power generation more.
Mayor Lin Chia-lung pointed out that, in addition to incentive measures, broadly installing solar facilities also requires loosening urban planning regulations and using reform of the "Electricity Act" as a supporting measure, allowing the establishment of regional energy management companies so that various places can operate and invest in solar photovoltaic panels. This would allow the benefits of electricity savings to be recovered and at the same time fed back to households that install them. Combined with pricing policy, this could encourage private investment.
At present, the Executive Yuan hopes that Taichung City's solar power generation will aim for 1 GW, the power generation of 2 units at the Taichung Power Plant. Mayor Lin Chia-lung has instructed the city government's Economic Development Bureau to cooperate with this target. If the target can be achieved, there will be a chance to shut down 2 units at the Taichung Power Plant. In the future, if more people generate electricity for their own use and Taichung-generated electricity is also used in Taichung, Taipower's Taichung Power Plant can greatly reduce coal and emissions.
