Taoyuan City Thousand-Person Hakka Pickled Mustard Greens Stomping Event: Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan: Promoting Food and Agriculture Education

Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan went to the Puzi District Farmers' Association granary yesterday (the 10th) in the morning to attend the "2017 Taoyuan City Thousand-Person Hakka Pickled Mustard Greens Stomping Event." Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said that in September of this year (the 106th year of the Republic of China), the "2017 Taoyuan City Thousand-Person Hakka Pickled Mustard Greens Stomping Event - Planting Ceremony" was held, and on the 10th, under the theme "A Century of Pickling Crock Flavor, Passed Down by a Thousand People Together," a thousand-person Hakka pickled mustard greens stomping experience event was held, with three generations, old, middle-aged, and young, participating together to see how Hakka pickled mustard greens are made and to recover the century-old heritage of Hakka pickled mustard greens. It was also the best food and agriculture education from "farm to table"; next year (the 107th year of the Republic of China), it is also planned to share the results of pickling salted vegetables and hold a Hakka salted vegetable food fair, so that all sectors can see the century-old traditional Hakka food culture.

Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan pointed out that the "Thousand-Person Hakka Pickled Mustard Greens Stomping Event" is the best food and agriculture education, allowing children to see the production process of ingredients and also allowing Hakka life wisdom to be integrated into education. In the future, the Education Bureau will be asked to study including Hakka salted vegetables in the "Daily Peace of Mind Ingredients" program and to have salted vegetables produced by young farmers supplied to schools.

Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said that the Puzi District Farmers' Association's homemaking class and young farmers are its features, and a pickled winter melon experience was also held previously. He hopes that the Puzi District Farmers' Association will serve as a demonstration for preserving Hakka cuisine and continue to pass it down. Now railway bento has launched "Taoyuan Hakka Railway Bento," and on China Airlines flights one can also eat flavored meals made with Hakka pickles. He believes that Hakka salted vegetables and pickles can also be sold around the world like Korean kimchi.
