Taichung Fruit and Vegetable Market 20th Anniversary Celebration: Taichung City Government Plans a New Green Energy Market
As the main fruit and vegetable wholesale market in central Taiwan, Taichung Fruit and Vegetable Market supplies the Greater Taichung area with fruits and vegetables. In 2017, total fruit and vegetable trading volume reached 181,402 metric tons, and total transaction value reached 6,709,374,917 yuan; yesterday (the 18th), the 20th anniversary celebration of the new site's opening was held. When Mayor Lin Chia-lung arrived to offer congratulations, he said that a solar photovoltaic power generation system would be planned for installation on the roof above the fruit and vegetable trading area, and that the company and consignees would be actively guided to replace diesel fruit and vegetable transport vehicles with environmentally friendly, pollution-free electric vehicles, turning the fruit and vegetable market into a new green energy market.
The history of Taichung Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market can be traced back to 1921 during the Japanese colonial period, when it was established at what is now the Second Market. In 1968, it moved to the old market on Yuanzi Street. In 1991, because business grew rapidly and the old site's area was insufficient, the current site on Zhongqing Road was selected for relocation planning. On April 28, 1997, it moved in and has officially operated there ever since. On the 18th, the 20th anniversary celebration was held, with a hundred tables set up to feast the market's hardworking employees and consignees. Mayor Lin Chia-lung, accompanied by Economic Development Bureau Director Lu Yao-chih, also attended to offer congratulations.
Mayor Lin Chia-lung pointed out that the city government has two plans for the fruit and vegetable market. The first is to plan and install a solar photovoltaic power generation system on the roof above the fruit and vegetable trading area. The second is to actively guide the company and consignees to replace diesel fruit and vegetable transport vehicles with environmentally friendly, pollution-free electric vehicles. It is hoped that this will promote new energy and respond to the environmental policy of reducing air pollution.
