The best time to take bougainvillea cuttings is from March to June, with spring being optimal, followed by early summer and late autumn; cuttings can also be taken in a warm winter. When taking cuttings, choose woody branches, cut them at a slant and insert them into the soil to a depth of about 4-6cm. In the early stage after planting, keep them in a shaded spot for care, and once they have rooted, move them to a place with plenty of sunlight.

1. Timing of cuttings

The best time to take bougainvillea cuttings is from March to June, because branches grow vigorously and have strong vitality in spring, and the soil moisture and temperature are better suited to plant growth and propagation. In addition, cuttings can be taken in early summer and late autumn, but success is relatively harder than in spring. In northern regions, cuttings can also be taken in winter when the indoor temperature is above 20°C, because its suitable growing temperature is 20-25°C; indoor conditions in the north are dry and warm, which also makes it easy for the plant to survive.

2. Cutting steps

First, select a vigorous, relatively thick, one-year-old woody branch as the cutting material, as this promotes new root growth and improves the survival rate; next, trim the cut branch and cut the end that goes into the soil at a slant; insert the prepared branch into the soil to a depth of roughly 4-6cm, make a hole in the soil first, then water thoroughly and move it to a shaded spot for care.

3. Points to note

About 20-30 days after planting, the cutting will root; after that, move it into the sunlight so it can carry out photosynthesis fully, ensuring at least 8-10 hours of ample light each day, so the plant grows stronger.
