In earlier articles, Lanyao said that you should try to avoid buying greenhouse flowers, so when buying flowers, how exactly should we choose so we can buy good potted plants and avoid being cheated?
Flower friends often tell Lanyao that they have bought lots of potted plants, but they always die before long, and they hope they can buy from Lanyao because they are easier to keep alive.
Indeed, good potted plants have strong resistance and tolerate being messed with, so they are not so easy to kill. For beginner flower friends, buying good potted plants can greatly reduce the difficulty of growing them.
What are the standards for a good potted plant? How do you choose a good potted plant?
If you want to choose a good potted plant, we should start from the following points.
1. Check whether the root system is well developed
Whether a potted plant grows well depends decisively on the root system. So to choose a good potted plant, you first need to check whether the root system is well developed.
You can look at the holes at the bottom of the flower pot. If you can see roots, that means the root system is growing fairly well. If you cannot see roots, you can gently shake the flower pot or the plant and check how firmly the plant is held.
If the plant wobbles a lot, it means the root system is not growing well, or it was only recently potted up. If the plant is fairly stable, it means the root system is growing well.
2. Check whether the branches and leaves are lush
Look at how the plant is growing. If the branches are lush and the leaves are plentiful, the plant is generally growing fairly well.
3. Check whether the plant is healthy
Checking how healthy the plant is is very necessary. Many flowers are quite prone to pests and diseases. If we buy a plant with pests or diseases and bring it home, it may very likely infect our other potted plants, so be sure to check carefully.
Observe whether the plant's leaves are abnormal, whether there is curling, blotching, or insects. Also check whether the leaf color is normal. Some sellers treat plants with certain chemicals to make the leaves abnormally emerald green, so pay attention to that.
4. Check whether the potting soil is moist
When buying a potted plant, check whether the potting soil is moist. A potted plant whose potting soil stays moist shows that it has usually been managed well. If the potting soil is too dry, it may be a flower that has usually been neglected or has gone through long-distance transport.
Flowers like this are relatively hard to grow after we buy them and bring them home. Because the potting soil is too dry, many roots have already been damaged. If we water thoroughly, it is very easy to cause root rot, so it is best not to buy them.
5. Choose one with flower buds rather than many open flowers
Many flower friends, when buying potted plants, just look at the plant being covered in flowers, think it looks nice, and buy it. In fact, when buying potted plants, Lanyao suggests you try to choose potted plants with buds about to open.
With potted plants like this, after we bring them home, the flower-viewing time will be a bit longer. If the buds have already opened, the flower-viewing time will be greatly reduced.
Through the above 5 points, we can choose a potted plant we are satisfied with. So after getting home, how should we grow it?
Many flower friends' first reaction may be to repot!
Don't rush! Repotting is definitely necessary, but before repotting we still have a lot of work to do. Space is limited, so tomorrow Lanyao will continue to talk about what we should do after flowers arrive home!
