Shunde flowers see obvious export growth to Belt and Road countries

Since the beginning of this year, seedling and flower exports from Shunde, Guangdong have shown a trend of rapid growth. From January to May, a total of 138 million seedlings and flowers were exported, with a total value of 31.88 million USD, up 103% and 78% year on year respectively.

The main varieties of flowers and seedlings exported from Shunde include Phalaenopsis orchids, kumquat trees, banyan trees, lucky bamboo and money trees. The destination countries include Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, the United States and others. In recent years, while helping flower enterprises consolidate traditional markets, Guangzhou Customs has organized trade analysis of emerging markets in Belt and Road countries and guided enterprises to organize production according to the requirements of target countries. In 2017, Shunde's flower exports to Belt and Road countries reached 24.34 million USD.

Since the beginning of this year, Shunde flowers have added 7 new export destinations, namely the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan and Greece. A total of 955 batches, 54.5 million seedlings and flowers, worth 17.824 million USD, were exported to Belt and Road countries, up 55%, 107% and 57% year on year respectively. The main export varieties were Phalaenopsis orchids and Cymbidium orchids.

Guangzhou Customs has promoted the "increase varieties, improve quality, create brands" initiative in the flower industry to expand the international influence of "Shunde flowers" and let Shunde flowers bloom more brilliantly around the world. At present, "Shunde Cymbidium" has completed the public notice for national geographical indication products and is about to become Shunde's first national agricultural product geographical indication product; "Chencun kumquat" has passed expert review for national geographical indication products and entered the public notice stage; 2 Phalaenopsis greenhouses using media have passed official U.S. registration assessment, strictly carrying out cultivation and planting, pest and disease prevention and control, export quarantine and other work in accordance with the highest standards of developed countries such as the United States and Canada.

In addition, at the customs clearance stage, in view of the high requirements of seedlings and flowers for temperature and humidity conditions, Guangzhou Customs has accelerated export inspection and release, moved pest and disease quarantine and prevention and control forward into the daily supervision process, and, on the basis of controlling quality and safety, reduced the export sampling inspection ratio to ensure rapid customs clearance and release upon declaration. The quarantine release time for flower exports has been reduced from 3 days in the past to 1 day at present.
