Exploring a New Model of Poverty Alleviation Through Single-Tree Forestry Carbon Sinks

On the 13th, the reporter learned from the Guizhou Provincial Development and Reform Commission that Guizhou will make use of the region's abundant forestry carbon sink resources to carry out a pilot program of targeted poverty alleviation through single-tree carbon sinks, exploring a new poverty alleviation model of "Internet + ecological development + targeted poverty alleviation" to support Guizhou's poverty alleviation work and ecological development.

According to the introduction, targeted poverty alleviation through single-tree carbon sinks follows scientific and rigorous methods, taking the eligible forest land resources owned by poor households and using the carbon dioxide absorbed by each tree as a product, which is sold to society at large through the single-tree carbon sink targeted poverty alleviation platform. All funds from the purchase of tree carbon dioxide will be transferred into the accounts of the corresponding poor households to help them increase their incomes.

At present, a total of 9 deeply impoverished villages in 8 cities and prefectures, including Guankou Village in Qibo Town, Pingba District, Anshun City, and Xiangping Village in Luping Town, Fuquan City, Qiannan Prefecture, have launched the development of single-tree carbon sink poverty alleviation pilot projects, and single-tree carbon sink poverty alleviation projects in 10 deeply impoverished villages will be launched for development in the near future. In the future, it is expected to cover 200 deeply impoverished villages across the province, helping 20,000 poor households escape poverty and preventing them from falling back into poverty.

Zhang Meijun, deputy director of the Guizhou Provincial Development and Reform Commission, said that purchasing carbon sinks can not only support Guizhou's poverty alleviation work, but also offset carbon emissions generated by individuals and organizations, promote Guizhou's ecological civilization development, and raise society's awareness of and determination to address climate change.
