Excerpt from the "30 Days, Help You Transform from Zero Basics to a Flower Growing Expert" series course

In home flower growing, there are a great many flower varieties to choose from. We can roughly divide them into herbaceous flowers and woody flowers. For woody flowers, when buying seedlings we mostly choose cuttings or grafted seedlings, and try to avoid buying seed-grown seedlings. For herbaceous flowers, however, the situation is a little different.

Common propagation methods for herbaceous flowers:

In home growing, the most commonly used method for herbaceous flowers is sowing and propagation. Of course, some herbaceous flower varieties can also be propagated by cuttings. But compared with each other, seed-grown seedlings and cutting-grown seedlings still differ quite a lot.

Differences between seed-grown seedlings and cutting-grown seedlings of herbaceous flowers:

Seed-grown herbaceous flower seedlings generally grow relatively quickly later on, have good branching, and their plant shape is easy to control. But the seedling stage is long and harder to manage,

while cutting-grown seedlings generally branch much less, and their natural plant shape is relatively thin and not easily full.

But in production and seedling raising, many merchants use cuttings to raise seedlings in order to get seedlings out as quickly as possible.

For example, the most common petunia. The petunia seedlings everyone buys online are mostly cutting-grown seedlings.

With this kind of seedling, we will find that it is just one branch, growing relatively long, but with very few branches. During growing, if you do not pinch off the tips, it is very hard to achieve a full-pot effect.

Seed-grown petunia seedlings, however, branch very well. Petunias sown in autumn can branch naturally even without artificial pinching, achieving a relatively full plant shape.

In addition, the well-known wax begonia is the same. Cutting-grown wax begonia seedlings branch far less, with very few branches, while seed-grown wax begonia branches very well.

From this we can see that for flower propagation, sowing cannot be said to be bad, nor can it be said to be simply good; it still must be treated differently.

For herbaceous flowers, when buying young seedlings, try to choose seed-grown seedlings, or sow them yourself. Later, Lanyao will teach everyone the sowing method. For woody flowers, however, you should choose cutting-grown or grafted seedlings.

Growing flowers is something that is very simple to describe as simple, and very complex to describe as complex. Just like Lanyao wanting to raise a pet dog, when you know nothing at all it really feels very hard, and there really are many problems, but for an old hand, none of it is a problem.
