Many orchid growers think orchids are semi-shade plants that do not need much light, and that this is why they must be shaded. Actually, that is not the case! It is because they fear heat that shade nets are set up for orchids. Orchids are not afraid of ordinary light, but they are afraid of high temperatures. Shading orchids can only produce a certain cooling effect!

Orchids need light. Light is a necessary condition for the differentiation and growth of orchid flower buds. Orchids like diffused light and cannot take direct strong light.

Orchids fear high temperatures, especially high temperature combined with high humidity. High temperatures are not friendly to flower bud formation. Generally, the suitable growing temperature for orchids is 18-28°C, and above 30°C can be considered a high temperature. When the temperature is 30-35°C, water, air and fertilizer must all be managed well. As long as these three major factors are managed well, orchids can still grow even above 30°C.

An expert orchid grower once said this: "Orchids are not afraid of ordinary light, but they fear high temperatures and like coolness. This is much like people. Just as we people feel more comfortable basking in the sun in winter, orchids are the same."
