Pot and Soil Selection

For potted Chinese trumpet creeper, choose a deep, large clay pot or wooden barrel with good permeability for planting. Fill the pot with fertile, loose, well-draining neutral or slightly acidic soil. Alternatively, use a mix of leaf mold and garden soil.

Placement Environment

Chinese trumpet creeper likes a sunny environment. In a semi-shaded environment, the plant grows poorly, with few and pale flowers. Place the plant in a sunny courtyard, balcony, or a south- or west-facing balcony as much as possible, and ensure timely ventilation. Do not place the pot on a north-facing or enclosed balcony.

Water and Fertilizer Requirements

Chinese trumpet creeper likes a humid environment, is slightly drought-tolerant, and fears waterlogging. Therefore, during the growing season, water frequently to keep the potting soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. From late autumn to the following spring, Chinese trumpet creeper enters dormancy; at this time, keep the potting soil on the drier side and only slightly moist.

Chinese trumpet creeper is very fond of fertilizer. In addition to adding sufficient base fertilizer to the soil when potting and repotting, after budding, apply a nitrogen-based fertilizer once every 10-15 days to promote the growth of branches and leaves. However, starting in May, switch to a phosphorus- and potassium-based fertilizer to promote flower bud differentiation and budding. Starting in June, spray a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves once every 7-10 days to promote vivid blooming. After the flowers fade, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer 1-2 more times to ensure sufficient nutrients before overwintering. In winter, Chinese trumpet creeper goes dormant, so do not fertilize.

Proper Pruning

After a brief winter dormancy, the plant enters a vigorous growth period in early spring, so promptly prune off dead branches, weak branches, leggy branches, and messy branches in early spring, and shorten overly long branches to promote the sprouting of new, robust branches. For plants over 5 years old, when buds sprout each year in early spring, keep the main trunk at 30-40 cm and cut it back, while also trimming the roots, keeping the main root system, and replanting. After new branches sprout following potting, keep only 3-5 new branches on the upper part and cut off all the rest, controlling water and fertilizer. After a year of care, it becomes a beautiful and youthful pot of Chinese trumpet creeper again.

Pest Control

Chinese trumpet creeper is very prone to aphid damage. Therefore, during care, it should be frequently ventilated to ensure sufficient humidity, but appropriate cooling is needed to avoid pest damage. If aphids are found, promptly rinse with clean water or spray pesticide to avoid severe pest damage.
