Excerpt from the course series "30 Days, Help You Go from Zero Basics to Flower-Growing Expert"

When our flower friends go to a flower shop to buy flowers, they all hope to look like an expert, so that the shop owner will not spot at a glance that we are newbies and quote us an exorbitant price. Or recommend some flowers of poor quality.

But to keep the owner from seeing through us as newbies, besides being careful with what we say, we still need to improve our own flower knowledge.

Flower friends who often read Lanyao's articles all know that Lanyao also sells rose seedlings in an online shop, and many flower friends ask Lanyao before buying seedlings:

Are your roses seeds? Or seedlings?

Actually, just from this one sentence, Lanyao knows this flower friend must be a newbie, or rather a flower-growing beginner.

Why?

The roses currently sold on the market are all rose seedlings, either cuttings or grafted seedlings. Very few rose seeds are sold, and for home growing, no one would choose to start from sowing.

As one of the woody flowers, the rose's main propagation methods are cuttings and grafting. Although roses can also be propagated by sowing, sowing propagation has relatively big drawbacks.

Here Lanyao will only use woody flowers as an example to explain.

The difference between seed-grown seedlings and cutting-grown seedlings of woody flowers:

First, Lanyao will briefly introduce the characteristics of seed-grown seedlings.

Seed-grown seedlings are also called seedling plants, meaning seedlings grown from germinated seeds.

1. Variability

Since seeds come from the combination of a mother plant and a father plant, the seeds carry the genetic genes of both the father and mother plants, so seedling plants first of all have variability.

Therefore, rose propagation by sowing is mostly used for breeding new varieties. The rose seedlings sold on the market are all cuttings or grafted seedlings.

2. Delayed flowering or difficulty flowering

Besides variability, seedling plants have another very big problem: the flowering time will be delayed, or they may even not flower.

Roses are still okay; generally they can flower half a year after sowing, but to reach the standard flower shape also takes 2-3 years.

But for plants like wisteria, seedling plants need a very long time to flower. Generally, wisteria seedling plants need 6-7 years to flower.

So many of our flower friends will find that a small wisteria dug out from under a big wisteria tree has been grown for several years and still does not flower, and that is because it is a seedling plant. But if it is a cutting that has survived and then been grafted, the flowering time can be brought forward.

You may say:

If sowing is so bad, why do so many people still use sowing? And other people's sown flowers bloom in two or three months, not taking as long as Lanyao said?

Yes, in home flower growing, sowing is a very important flower propagation method. What Lanyao said above about not recommending sowing refers to woody flowers.

Different flowers also have different best propagation methods. For example, for some herbaceous flowers, the advantages of sowing propagation are much greater than those of cuttings.

But there will also be some problems. Tomorrow Lanyao will continue to analyze them for you.Welcome to follow Lanyao's WeChat public account: Lanyao Garden (ilanyao) to learn systematic flower-growing techniques
