During the holiday, Huahua went to a friend's house and saw a gardenia bonsai there. Only after asking did Huahua learn that a potted gardenia grown for just 3 months can also be turned into an old-trunk bonsai. What an amazing trick! Having consulted the expert, Huahua must share the experience with everyone!

How does a potted gardenia become an old-trunk bonsai?

1. Remove the plant from the pot

Choose a healthy gardenia, prune the excess branches and leaves, then separate it from the flowerpot, gently shake off the soil, and be careful not to damage the roots.

2. Wash and trim the roots

Rinse the roots gently under running water. After washing, cut off the rotten roots and diseased roots, especially those with root-knot nematodes, and keep the fibrous roots and fine roots.

3. Disinfect

Soak the trimmed roots in a potassium permanganate solution diluted 500~1000 times for 2~3 hours.

4. Mix the soil

Mix slightly acidic sandy red soil, humus soil and coarse sand in a 7:2:1 ratio to make the potting soil. If you want to be extravagant, you can use akadama soil mixed with a little garden soil.

5. Pot and plant

Place the plant into the pot, not too deep, and be careful not to let the roots curl up. After filling with soil, water thoroughly once, then place it in a cool place to recover.

6. Shape after flowering

Gardenia bonsai come in many styles, such as the straight-trunk style, curved-trunk style, slanting-trunk style and cascade style. After flowering or during the dormant period, you can use materials such as palm fiber and aluminum wire to bend and shape the thick branches, and prune the overly dense thin and weak branches.

How should a gardenia bonsai be cared for in summer?

1. Light

Gardenia does not like strong light. When the summer temperature is too high, shade it appropriately, place it in a spot with scattered indoor light, and just keep it ventilated.

2. Watering

Gardenia likes moisture. In summer, water evaporates quickly, so water it once in the morning and once in the evening every day. If the potting soil has poor air permeability, water once every 1~2 days. Mist the leaves every day to maintain relatively high air humidity.

3. Fertilizing

Gardenia likes fertilizer. During the peak growing season, apply decomposed cake fertilizer water about once every half month. Reduce fertilizing in hot weather, and stop fertilizing when the temperature exceeds 35 degrees.

4. Repotting

Bonsai gardenia should be repotted and given fresh soil once every 2~3 years. When repotting, trim the roots and reshape the plant.

Fellow flower lovers, actually it is very simple to grow an old trunk,
