3 tricks to beat the heat for roses, blooming nonstop and easily overflowing the pot

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
The weather is getting hotter and hotter, and rose lovers need to pay attention: once the strong sun hits, the leaves wilt in no time. Today Huahua will introduce a few simple heat-protection tips, so your roses will no longer fear the difficulty of getting through summer!

Avoiding the heat

Shading

1. Shade net

When growing roses outdoors, if the plants are large and numerous, you need to put up a shade net. Be careful not to block all the light; half shading is enough. Of course, if you find that too troublesome, you can also use a sun umbrella.

2. Bamboo mat or heat-insulating board

When roses are grown against a wall, because the wall absorbs a lot of heat, the heat will be transferred directly to the roses. At this time, you need to hang a bamboo mat or heat-insulating board against the wall to shade and insulate against heat.

Double potting

Choose a ceramic pot two sizes larger than the rose's original flowerpot, spread a layer of crushed stones on the bottom, then place the rose pot into the larger pot, and be careful that the two pots do not touch directly.

You can also stuff soaked paper towels, sphagnum moss, shallow-rooted weeds, etc. between the two pots to cool, insulate against heat and retain moisture.

Mulching the pot

Cover the potting soil with bark or sun-tolerant plants with shallow roots to prevent the rose's potting soil from being dried out and heated through by the sun. Be careful that the covering area does not exceed more than half, and leave the other side open for ventilation and for observing the dry and wet conditions.

Combination potted plants

If the rose flowerpot is relatively large, you can use the combination potted plant method for shade maintenance, placing heat-tolerant plants such as perilla and moss rose around the rose to create shade for it.

Cooling down

The most suitable growing temperature for roses is 18~25 degrees. Avoiding the heat alone is not enough; some cooling measures need to be done at the same time for them to grow well.

Ventilation and cooling

When growing roses on an indoor balcony, even if you open the windows for ventilation, the roses will still feel stuffy and hot. If you turn on a small fan and point it beside the potted plants, it can effectively increase air circulation and thus cool them down. Be sure not to point it directly at the flowerpots.

Water spraying and misting

After the temperature exceeds 33 degrees, roses will enter a semi-dormant state. At this time, spray water once each morning and evening, and mist the air and ground around the plants to cool them down.

Care

Light

Roses love light. Only with sufficient light can the flowers be large, the colors vivid, and the growth vigorous. During the peak growing period, ensure more than half a day of light each day. When entering the high-temperature semi-dormant period, pay attention to shading and avoid exposure to the scorching sun.

Watering

Roses cannot lack water throughout their entire growth process. When the temperature is too high, the plant's water evaporation and consumption are both very large. Spray the plants with water every morning and evening, and water thoroughly about once every 2~3 days to keep the potting soil moist.

Fertilizing

During the flowering period, apply decomposed bean cake fertilizer, chicken manure fertilizer or compound fertilizer about once every 10 days. Apply thin fertilizer frequently. In high-temperature weather, reduce fertilization.

Pest and disease control

Pests

In summer, roses are easily infected by scale insects, aphids, red spiders, etc., mostly caused by high temperature and high humidity, poor ventilation and insufficient light. Once discovered, immediately cut off the infected branches and leaves, thin the branches for ventilation, and at the same time spray with a 2000-fold dilution of 10% imidacloprid wettable powder to kill them.

Diseases

Common rose diseases include powdery mildew, leaf spot, etc. First cut off the diseased leaves and branches, and spray the diseased areas with Guoguang Yingna, carbendazim solution, etc. diluted 500~1000 times, once a week; about 2~3 times can effectively treat them.
