Succulents turned into little buns overnight, and the whole family was stunned

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Fellow succulent growers, have you noticed lately that your succulents are starting to look "off"? Yesterday it was a little lotus, and today it has turned into a bun. Haha, this means they are entering dormancy! Now let's take a look at which succulents love turning into buns the most~

Mountain Rose (Greenovia)

Mountain Rose is the most common summer-dormant succulent; most enter dormancy once temperatures reach above 26°C

Huahua thinks the Mountain Rose looks even more beautiful when it closes up during dormancy. What do you think?

When the Mountain Rose closes up, that is a sign it has entered dormancy. At this point it is best to reduce watering. If you originally watered every 2-3 days, you can change to every 3-5 days, and after 2 weeks change to every 5-7 days... gradually reducing the frequency

Some of the old leaves at the bottom of the closed rosette will die off, which is completely normal. There is no need to water; if you water too much it will not absorb it anyway, and instead it may cause rot

Kalanchoe thyrsiflora (Flapjacks)

The first succulent Huahua ever grew was Kalanchoe thyrsiflora. It is very drought-tolerant and easy to grow, and it also goes dormant in summer

Although Kalanchoe thyrsiflora closes up when dormant, there is another situation in which it also turns into a bun: too much water causing root rot

If you think you may have watered a bit too much a few days ago, dig it up right away and check whether the roots have rotted. If they have, remove the rotted roots, let it dry out and replant, otherwise it will die within a few days

Aeonium (Magefa)

Although Aeonium is relatively easy to get through summer, it will also close into a bun and enter dormancy

Even the normally bold and imposing Aeonium can become this cute. I wonder if yours has successfully closed up?

If you want your Aeonium to close into a bun, you need sunlight plus water control. Apart from shading it between 12 noon and 2 in the afternoon, it can take direct sun. Water less, and it will slowly close up

Some growers' Aeoniums show dormancy by dropping leaves, which is also normal. But pay attention to whether the potting soil is breathable and reduce watering to avoid root rot. Once the weather cools, it will grow back again~

Echeveria runyonii 'Topsy Turvy'

The normally sprawled-out Topsy Turvy, once summer dormancy arrives, curls its leaves inward and also becomes a gentle "big" bun

If your Topsy Turvy has not closed up yet, that means it has not entered dormancy. Continue normal care, and neither watering nor sunlight can be skipped

For a Topsy Turvy that has already closed up, because the leaves have a thick layer of white powder, it is fairly sun-resistant, so continued sun exposure is fine. But do not water onto the leaves: first, it will rub off the powder, and second, water droplets will cause the sunlight to burn the leaves

Echeveria 'Rainbow' (Yudie)

Everyone says Yudie is the number one succulent that is sure to die in summer, with an almost 0 survival rate through summer. But look at the Yudie grown by the experts: a perfect thousand-layer bun

Turning Yudie into a bun is not easy; it requires appropriate light plus water control, and if you get it slightly wrong, it dies. But since it is risky either way, you might as well give it a try

Echeveria derenbergii (Jingye)

Jingye is something almost everyone has one of. In summer its black rot speed is on par with Yudie, and if grown well, it also takes on a bun shape during dormancy

However, many growers' Jingye has grown leggy, which looks even harder to describe in one sentence, too ugly...

The main reason for Jingye growing leggy is too much water. In summer you can control water appropriately: first, to avoid leggy growth, and second, to reduce waterlogging and black rot

There are many dormant states for succulents

Do you have any succulents at home that have turned into buns?

Hurry up and show them off too
