Detailed Guide to Propagating Money Tree from Cuttings: Turn One Pot into a Whole Houseful
The money tree (Pachira aquatica) is a potted indoor plant grown for its stems and foliage. Usually, it is artificially shaped into three-lobed or five-lobed forms, giving it high ornamental value. Because this tree is native to the south, it is relatively scarce in the north, so we developed a sand culture method for softwood cutting propagation, which succeeded in northern regions (Shandong). 1. Preparing the Seedbed
Choose a nursery site with deep, fertile soil, and form it into raised beds 1 m wide, with the length depending on the quantity. A north-south orientation is preferable. Deeply turn the bed surface, remove the topsoil, and tamp it firm. Lay a 3 cm thick layer of gravel on the bottom, then spread 10-15 cm of fresh river sand mixed with furnace cinder on top. The moisture level should be such that it forms a ball when squeezed in the hand and breaks apart when released. Spray the bed surface with 40% formalin at 400 times dilution, soaking to a depth of 3-5 cm, then cover with plastic film for 3 days to disinfect the soil.
2. Collecting Cuttings
Select vigorous, current-year semi-lignified branches, and cut them on a cloudy day or a windless morning. Cut them to a length of 6 to 7 cm, with the lower cut made at a slant, positioned below a leaf or axillary bud. The cut should be smooth to encourage callus formation. Generally, each cutting should have two palmate leaves; be careful not to damage the leaves, so as to support photosynthesis.
3. Fine Cutting
Money trees are propagated by cuttings from late June to early August. Choose a cloudy summer day or early or late in the day, cutting and inserting immediately. When cutting, place half of the cutting in 25 PPM ABT rooting solution and soak for 20-24 hours, then remove and rinse clean with water. Use a small wooden stick to poke holes in the bed surface, then insert the cuttings along the holes, and seal and firm the holes. Shorter cuttings can be inserted straight, while longer cuttings can be inserted at an angle. Insert to a depth that keeps them upright, generally 3-5 cm. After inserting, water thoroughly promptly, straighten any tilted cuttings, and cover well with plastic sheeting.
4. Seedling Stage Management
After cutting, ventilate once every 3 days. In June-August, temperatures are high and water evaporates quickly, so spray water once in the morning and once in the evening. Keep the temperature between 23-25 degrees and the humidity at about 80% of field water-holding capacity. To promote lignification of the seedlings, spray 0.2% monopotassium phosphate before the end of August. To prevent fungal infection, spray the bed surface with thiophanate-methyl or carbendazim once every 7 days. Generally, callus tissue forms in about 15 days, and rooting begins in about 30 days.
5. Transplanting Seedlings
Before potting the seedlings, prepare a nutrient soil first: mix 3 parts leaf mold, 1 part sand, and 2 parts garden soil, then plant. When transplanting, be careful not to damage the roots, and set the depth based on the original base of the plant. After planting, water thoroughly and place in a shaded area, avoiding direct sun exposure. Afterward, water daily according to the condition of the potting soil, following the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings.
