If a plant is to grow well, besides regular watering, it also needs some extra nutrients from time to time. Especially for those plants that bloom frequently, without giving them some fertilizer, how could you ever see a sight of blooming flowers? Fertilizer is definitely necessary, but it should not be applied blindly. How exactly should roses be fertilized to benefit their growth?

According to the basic principle, the best time to fertilize roses is in spring and autumn. These two periods are exactly the growing season and flowering season for roses, when they need more nutrients. In summer and winter, roses grow slowly, so you can skip fertilizing or fertilize less. Any excess cannot be absorbed by the plant, which is not only wasteful but may also harm the plant.

The first fertilization is best done in spring, when new branches and tender leaves have just sprouted. Timely replenishing nutrients for roses lets them grow faster. You can use a mixture of diluted liquid fertilizer and cake fertilizer, which is greatly beneficial to the growth of branches and leaves. The second fertilization should be more than one month later, preferably before the intense heat, with fertilization before June being ideal.

At this time, many rose varieties are in their flowering period, making it a fertilization period not to be missed. At this stage, you can still use diluted liquid fertilizer and cake fertilizer, and the amount of fertilizer can be increased somewhat. Or after another 15-20 days, add nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer. You can choose a ready-made NPK compound fertilizer available on the market, which can make the flowers bloom larger and more vividly, and help extend the flowering period.

The third suitable period in the year for fertilizing roses is autumn. After resting and recovering through a summer, many roses will welcome another flowering period in autumn. At this time, with clear autumn skies and fresh air, the root system's absorption capacity begins to recover from the sluggish state of summer. At this point, watering with liquid fertilizer + nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer is essential, and the frequency can be once every half month. Light fertilizer applied frequently is better.

Besides the method of fertilizing by watering the root system, you can also appropriately apply foliar fertilizer by spraying the leaves. The foliar fertilization method can serve as a channel for nutritional supplementation. Spraying liquid fertilizer on the leaves every few days can not only increase the plant's absorption of nutrients, but also, when the leaves are healthy and thriving, resist many pests and diseases to a certain extent.
