In yesterday's article, Lanyao talked about these terms: herbaceous flowers, woody flowers, perennial flowers, and annual and biennial flowers.
So today Lanyao will explain specifically what these represent, and what guidance they offer for our flower growing process.
What are herbaceous flowers?
What we often call herbaceous flowers actually refers to herbaceous ornamental plants, that is, flowers whose aboveground parts wither and die every year. Evergreen foliage plants also belong to herbaceous flowers, such as Alocasia macrorrhizos, Monstera deliciosa, spider plant, and so on.
Herbaceous flowers can also be divided into perennials and annuals and biennials. For example, chrysanthemums and Gazania are perennial herbaceous flowers, while petunias and Lobelia are annual and biennial herbaceous flowers.
What are woody flowers?
Many people may not yet understand woody flowers, but if Lanyao says trees, everyone can easily understand, right? A simple way to understand woody flowers is flowers that grow like trees. Their stems and roots form xylem, and the branches become woody and turn into sturdy plants. For example: Bougainvillea, Aglaia odorata, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, roses, and so on.
What are annual and biennial flowers?
They can be simply understood as flower varieties whose life span is completed within 1-2 years, from sowing, growing, blooming, and setting seed to aging and death. Most herbaceous flowers are annual or biennial.
What are perennial flowers?
Flowers that can live for more than 2 years. Woody flowers all belong to perennial flowers.
Guidance:
Once you understand the classification attributes of flowers, you can correctly predict their blooming and fruiting time and grasp the best planting timing.
For example, for annual and biennial herbaceous flower varieties, autumn is the best time to sow. If you sow again in spring, the flowering period is often greatly shortened or they may even fail to bloom.
What Lanyao is sharing today is the most basic flower growing knowledge, but precisely because it is basic, we need to master it firmly. Only by accurately distinguishing which category your potted plant belongs to can you treat it correctly and grow it well.
Tomorrow Lanyao will tell everyone a very fun little story about growing flowers. If you want to hear it, remember to followLanyao's WeChat public account: Lanyao Garden (ilanyao)
