Do you really know how to water them? You'd better save these little tips, and absolutely don't step on the minefields!
Watering succulents seems to be an eternal topic. Maybe you have asked many people, succulent friends, Taobao sellers, even greenhouse owners, and the answers you got were all different!
Some say one week, some say half a month, some say one month. This probably confused all the friends. Who should you listen to?
Actually, none of them are wrong, it's just that those methods suit them! Not you! Besides, the succulents they grow are all in different conditions!!!
So when exactly is the most suitable time to water??? Today this post must be the ultimate version of watering! And it is simple and easy to learn, suitable for the whole country!
First I want to say that judging watering by time is wrong!
Because of the differences between north and south, the differences in succulent-growing environments, the differences in pot sizes, and the differences in soil mixes, these differences determine the differences in how fast the water dries!
Even in the same environment, if the pot size and material are different, the speed at which the water dries will absolutely also be different! Does everyone agree with this? For different situations, it is divided into the following parts
1. Mature plants and old stems
2. Leaf cuttings and small seedlings
3. Succulents before they are established (that is, succulents just obtained whose root systems have not yet grown well)
4. Summer survival
Please have friends match their succulents to the right category!
1. Mature plants and old stems
1. Super simple, see whether the leaves are flat and wilted! (As shown below)
2. Pinch the leaves to see whether they are soft
The above two situations prove that they are short of water, and you can water them!
3. How to water
You can water thoroughly along the roots (if water seeps out from the bottom of the pot, it is thoroughly watered, as shown below)
It is best to choose a well-ventilated evening or night for watering!
You can also spray to water the plants, but remember, after watering you must blow off the water droplets on the leaves!
2. Leaf cuttings and small seedlings
Leaf cuttings and small seedlings both like moisture, so try to keep them moist. Their watering method is very different from that of old stems. Water about once a week, and you can also water thoroughly!
Small seedlings and leaf cuttings should try not to be in direct sunlight. Place them in shade or in a relatively cool spot on the balcony!
3. Succulents before they are established
Before new succulents are established, they need a moist environment to promote root growth, so you can also judge by time and water about once a week!
By the way, here is why friends are told to let newly received succulents air dry for a day before planting, or to water the afternoon of the second day after planting, because the roots may be damaged during shipping after being removed from the soil. If the wounds have not dried and healed, contact with water can easily cause bacterial infection and lead to rot!
4. Summer survival
This is a season regarded as the grim reaper! Actually there is nothing much to it. Apart from doing a good job of pest prevention (I will write another experience post about pest prevention later), the only secret of watering is to hold back, don't give in to itchy hands! Hahaha!
The expert's experience is:
1. Water once every one and a half months, that is, about 45 days (even if the leaves are wrinkled again, you must hold back);
2. Choose a windy evening or night for watering;
3. After watering, blow off the water droplets on the leaves
4. For the next three days, maintain ventilation and shade all day. If ventilation is insufficient, you can use an electric fan.
Remember the above key points, and there will basically be no problem getting through the summer.
In summer, succulents will be severely short of water and dry and flat! Don't feel sorry for them! Hold back!
For succulents in the establishment period, keep the soil moist. In about one or two weeks they will send out roots. By then, pinch the leaves. If they are a little hard, then roots have already grown, and then you can let them get some sun, but they must not be exposed to strong sunlight.
I believe after reading this, everyone should have their own method for watering. Hui Zhang will then change the angle and chat with everyone a bit more. There are 5 things you absolutely must not do when it comes to watering.
1. Water every day
This is the problem beginners are most prone to. They always worry that the succulents will dry out, but believe Hui Zhang, succulents are tougher than you imagine, and succulents themselves belong to the drought-tolerant type of plants, so watering generally follows the principle of preferring dry over wet.
Especially in summer, watering once every one or two months is also fine. For the specific method, refer to the above.
2. Water at noon
At noon the temperature is at its highest and the light is also strongest. Watering at this time can easily kill succulents, because in the middle of summer this sudden shock is still too stimulating. I advise all succulent friends to try to wait until the evening.
3. Water accumulating in the leaf center
Some succulent friends water the leaves, thinking this can let the leaves drink water faster, but in summer the light is strong. Water droplets on the leaves are like a magnifying glass. When sunlight focuses on the leaves, it immediately burns the leaves and leaves purple scars.
If water accumulates in the leaf center, it is best to absorb it dry with paper. Because water accumulating in the leaf center can easily cause heart rot and leaf rot, and it also easily breeds bacteria.
4. Water accumulating at the bottom of the pot
The most direct consequence of water accumulating at the bottom of the pot is root rot. If the root system has all rotted, then this succulent is really in a bad state. Therefore, when choosing flower pots, it is recommended to choose ones with holes.
Second, placing ceramsite at the bottom of the pot can also play a role in air permeability and water drainage, and the price is also relatively affordable.
5. Impure water quality
Hui Zhang does not mean to use pure water with no impurities and very natural to water succulents, but to avoid sewage, or laundry water, water used to rinse milk bottles, and so on. In general, apart from tap water and rainwater, do not use other water.
Some succulent friends may think that water used to rinse milk is very nutritious, but after all, our succulents are not a young girl's skin, and are not maintained this way.
Moreover, long-term use will not only affect the soil, but also easily attract insects. Therefore, for watering succulent plants, just use normal tap water, and you can let it sit for a while before use.
In the final analysis, in summer watering should not be excessive, and at the same time attention should be paid to ventilation and shading. Choose a cool evening for watering. You cannot blindly apply other people's watering principles. Only by understanding the principles can you figure out what suits you best.
