On June 16, the first Dehong Bonsai Exhibition, organized by the Dehong Ruifeng Bonsai Club, opened at the Mangshi Sports Center. Pots of fresh and elegant bonsai works attracted the eyes of residents. Visitors and bonsai enthusiasts lingered among pots of exquisite bonsai of various styles, adding a festive touch to the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival.
Xu Wanming, vice chairman of the Yunnan Provincial Bonsai and Viewing Stone Association, relevant heads of the prefecture and Mangshi Agriculture Bureaus, as well as members of the bonsai club and bonsai enthusiasts, attended the opening ceremony.
This bonsai exhibition displayed a total of 120 large and medium-sized bonsai. There were large bonsai of pine and cypress types with vigorous and weathered trunks, with shapes varying along the trunks and branches slanting horizontally, vigorous yet elegant in form and full of charm. There were also small and miniature bonsai, incorporating elements such as wild grasses and green bamboo, fully demonstrating profound humanistic heritage and the long-standing bonsai culture. The three-dimensional display arrangement integrated people and scenery into one, creating an artistic conception in which people walk within the scenery as if traveling through a painting, the scenery moves because of the people, and people linger because of the scenery.
The head of the Mangshi Agriculture Bureau and the head of the Dehong Ruifeng Bonsai Club delivered speeches successively, and Xu Wanming, vice chairman of the Yunnan Provincial Bonsai and Viewing Stone Association, commented on this bonsai exhibition. According to Luo Benqiu, director of the Dehong Ruifeng Bonsai Club, the theme of this exhibition is "Carry Forward Traditional Bonsai Culture, Build a Beautiful Dehong Borderland." All exhibited works were fine pieces made by club members or bonsai enthusiasts within the prefecture, and most of the materials were local plants and related stones, with strong local cultural characteristics. Although it was the first exhibition, its scale and quality exceeded the expected goals. The first bonsai exhibition is based on building an ecological homeland in Dehong, boosting bonsai culture and industry, and will play a positive role in implementing the building of a beautiful Dehong.
Xu Wanming, vice chairman of the Yunnan Provincial Bonsai and Viewing Stone Association, said that Dehong Prefecture's first bonsai exhibition has a milestone role. The bonsai art and materials are rich in local characteristics, especially the Yunnan pine bonsai, which is more mature. The exhibition not only inherited and carried forward the characteristics of Yunnan bonsai exhibitions, but also expanded the specifications and varieties of bonsai.
After careful evaluation by the expert group, this exhibition selected a total of 6 gold awards, 12 silver awards, and 20 bronze awards. During the exhibition, teachers from the Yunnan Provincial Bonsai and Viewing Stone Association also gave on-site demonstrations of bonsai making or exchanges of skills for Dehong bonsai enthusiasts.
