In daily life, refined people often like to place artistically appealing bonsai at home to cultivate their character and calm their mind.

Rock-clinging bonsai is a style of bonsai art in which stone is the main element, trees grow clinging to the stone, and stone and tree become one integrated whole.

In this kind of bonsai, trees are planted among the stones, with their roots extending into the crevices to grow, while the branches and trunks coil and reach into stone holes or grow in clusters on the stone, or hang down below the stone, or slant sideways beside the stone, making the curious stones and ancient trees set each other off beautifully.

Generally, banyan trees (Ficus) are suitable for the rock-embracing style of rock-clinging bonsai.

For dry rock-clinging bonsai, hard stone materials are mostly used, such as Yingde stone (with diverse textures), and the tree roots are inserted into the stone crevices to create the shape. Tree species with long roots are mostly used, such as Fujian tea (Carmona retusa), elm (Ulmus), and many-flowered moonflower (Serissa japonica), etc. The leaves are all picked off, the soil on the roots is cleaned away and the roots are straightened, and according to the texture of the stone material, the tree roots are guided into the stone crevices and then bound with wire loops.

To prevent damaging the roots, you can first pad with wooden strips wrapped in rubber and encourage the tree roots to press more tightly against the stone crevices, then place the stone and tree on the potting soil and bury the fine roots of the tree in the soil. The initial maintenance method is the same as for the water rock-clinging style, but do not let the westward-slanting sunlight shine directly on the roots in the stone crevices, so as to avoid the stone absorbing heat and scorching the roots.
