Is it necessary to use a tray under the flowerpot when growing plants?

When growing flowers and vegetables in flowerpots, is it necessary to use a tray? What is the difference between using a tray and not using one?

Have you ever had this experience? You grow a few small green plants on your office desk, without a tray, and every time you water them, water seeps out from the bottom of the flowerpot, soaking your documents and possibly even reaching a dangerous power outlet? You grow a few vegetables on the balcony, without a tray, and water flows everywhere, making the balcony filthy... When this happens, just add a tray and the problem is solved.
At this point, someone always speaks up: "I once grew xx flowers and used a tray, but the flowers never grew well and eventually died, so this tray cannot be used." So, is this tray an angel or a demon?
Let's first look at what the tray does.
A tray is a container that supports the flowerpot, mainly used to catch the excess water that seeps out after watering, preventing water from flowing and contaminating the surrounding environment. In other words, generally, green plants grown indoors need a tray, while those grown outdoors do not really need one.
But why is using a tray bad for green plants? That is because the excess water leaking from the bottom of the flowerpot,if not poured out in time, will remain in the tray for a long time, hindering air exchange and making the roots of the green plants "breathe with difficulty." Too much accumulated water may even "suffocate them to death." On the other hand, long-term repeated water accumulation will also cause the "waste excreted" by the green plants to accumulate in the tray, poisoning the plant roots and making the green plants grow worse and worse, or even die.
Tip:Therefore, whether to use a tray depends on the environment where the green plants grow. If cultivating them indoors, considering hygiene issues, it is best to use a tray, and after each watering, promptly pour out the accumulated water in the tray. Never let the accumulated water sit overnight.
If cultivating them outdoors, it is best not to use a tray. Letting the green plants connect with the ground is also excellent!
