Gardenia blooms in June, its rich fragrance impossible to ignore

For those who grow gardenia at home, you will notice that on ordinary days the gardenia stands quietly in the corner, until it blooms each year in June, its elegant fragrance making its presence impossible to "ignore." Once the gardenia blooms, having begun forming flower buds in winter, it will not open until close to the summer solstice; the longer the budding period, the more enduring its delicate fragrance.
So what methods do gardeners need to pay attention to in their regular care to make gardenia blooms fragrant and abundant?
1. Soil
For gardenia cultivation, the soil should be fertile, loose, well-draining and acidic. If gardeners can compost pine sawdust thoroughly and mix it into the soil, the effect will be even better. In addition, gardenia needs to be repotted once every 1-2 years in spring, which helps the root system grow.
2. Fertilizer
Gardenia loves fertilizer, but it is best to apply frequent light feedings. In spring and autumn, growth is slow, so apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every 2-3 weeks; after summer arrives, temperatures rise and growth gradually becomes vigorous, so you can apply a general-purpose liquid flower fertilizer once every 7-10 days, and do not fertilize during winter dormancy. Use a general-purpose organic nutrient solution for flowers as the fertilizer, diluted 500 times to water the roots, and be sure to avoid concentrated or raw fertilizer.
3. Temperature
Gardenia loves warmth, with an optimal growth temperature of 18-22°C. In winter, keep it indoors above 5°C to overwinter; it can tolerate short periods of 0°C low temperatures, but below 0°C it is prone to freezing damage. Therefore, gardeners should pay attention to adjusting the temperature during care.
4. Light
Gardenia loves cool shade, and must absolutely not be exposed to scorching sun. Many gardeners mistakenly believe that gardenia requires full shade, which leads to mistakes in cultivation. In fact, while ensuring a cool and shady environment, it is necessary to maintain 60% light throughout the day to meet its growth needs. Generally, it is enough to avoid the scorching sun at noon and in the afternoon.
5. Water
Gardenia loves moisture. In spring, summer and early autumn, water frequently and sprinkle water on the plant and the surrounding ground to keep the soil and air moist, so the plant grows vigorously. It is best to water with rainwater or fermented rice-washing water.
