When you water potted flowers with tap water over the long term, the potting soil very easily becomes compacted. If you do not repot and change the soil for the flowers, they are almost as good as "buried alive" - the soil is not breathable and the roots rot easily. If you find repotting troublesome, you can try this one simple little method.

Of course, this situation applies when the potting soil is not compacted especially badly. We can often take a chopstick or a small wooden stick and loosen the soil for the potted plants. Of course, when loosening the soil, do it after the potting soil has dried out completely. The method is to use the thinner end of the chopstick and repeatedly poke it into the soil along the edge of the flower pot. This can loosen the soil for the potted plant appropriately, and when watering, water can penetrate through more easily.

But be sure to pay attention: when poking, the movement must be gentle and slow, otherwise if you damage the plant's root system, that would be terrible.

Usually we can also do some prevention. If the potting soil is loose and breathable, it will not easily become compacted:

(1) Usually when we water plants, most of the time we use tap water, and this is no problem. But before watering the plants, it is better to first leave it in a bucket to sit and air out for 3-5 days before watering the flowers; at the very least it must sit for 24 hours. This will evaporate the chlorine and harmful substances inside, and watering the flowers this way is much better.

(2) During the process of watering potted plants, you can water the flowers with fermented rice-washing water, especially if you add one or two drops of rice vinegar to it. This can effectively prevent the potting soil from becoming compacted.

(3) If conditions permit, you can store some rainwater or snow water when it rains or snows, and use this soft water to water the flowers. The potted plants will not easily become compacted and will grow vigorously.

If the soil in the flower pot is really badly compacted, it is still best to replace the soil in it and repot it. Moreover, putting some pine needles, loofah sponge, etc. at the bottom of the pot will make it even more breathable.
