Do gardening friends often run into problems with cuttings surviving? The branches quickly wither and die after being stuck into the soil? Today Huahua will introduce a particularly good cutting technique: using floral foam for cuttings!

What is floral foam?

Floral foam is a dark green, rectangular brick-like flower arranging tool. When dry it is as light as foam, and after absorbing water it is as heavy as a lead block. Used for cuttings, it can both secure the cuttings and retain moisture.

Floral foam is very cheap. Search online and you will find it everywhere, and one piece costs less than 1 yuan.

How do you do stem cuttings with floral foam?

Floral foam stem cuttings are relatively suitable for flowers such as Chinese rose, rose, climbing rose, and clematis.

Steps

1. Cut the floral foam into small pieces, soak them in clean water for more than a week, and change the water every day;

2. Cut a section of vigorous Chinese rose branch with 2~3 young leaves, cut the upper incision flat, and cut the lower incision diagonally downward, as the cutting.

3. Insert the cutting directly into a small piece of floral foam, to a depth of about 2/3, then place it in a tray with water to soak, and be careful to maintain it in diffused light.

4. Once roots have drilled out from the bottom, begin potting up.

5. When potting up, plant it together with the floral foam. The soil can be loose, breathable nutrient soil or a mix of peat soil and perlite. After potting, normal care is enough.

How do you do bud cuttings with floral foam?

Floral foam bud cuttings are generally more suitable for plants such as kalanchoe, camellia, pothos, and dahlia.

Steps

1. Cut a vigorous terminal bud free of pests and diseases, remove the lower leaves, and keep 2~3 leaves at the top.

2. Soak the selected cuttings in a diluted 500~100-fold carbendazim solution for one day, then rinse them clean with water and set aside.

3. Insert the cuttings into small water-soaked floral foam blocks, to a depth of about 2/3. After inserting, place them in a shallow water basin for care and observe the rooting situation.

4. After rooting, pot them up, placing them together with the floral foam into the potting soil. The soil can be prepared by mixing nutrient soil, leaf mold, and other materials with perlite. Water thoroughly once, then place in a cool, ventilated place for care.

How do you do root cuttings with floral foam?

Floral foam root cuttings are relatively suitable for flowers such as tree peony, Chinese peony, and wintersweet. The roots of these flowers can also produce adventitious buds.

Steps

1. Choose a vigorous plant, dig out the roots, and cut them into 4-10 cm root segments.

2. Remove the rotted root system, cut off excess branches, then place in a cool, ventilated place to dry.

3. Insert the root segments diagonally into the floral foam and place them in a shallow basin with water for care.

4. After new buds grow, pot them up together with the floral foam. The potting soil can be loose, breathable granular soil. Keep the potting soil moist and place it in a ventilated, bright place for care.
