Fungus gnats are both annoying and fond of sucking the roots and stems of flower seedlings. Many flower lovers have been fighting fungus gnats for years. Recently, a flower lover told Huahua that her petunias actually eat fungus gnats! What's going on here? Keep reading!

Petunia

Complete Guide to Flower Growing

Some friends who grow petunias have found that ever since they started growing petunias, the fungus gnats around their other flowers disappeared! Upon closer inspection, they were all stuck to the petunias!

The stems of petunias are covered with many fine hairs that can secrete a sticky liquid. Experienced growers surely know that petunias feel sticky to the touch, and it is precisely because of this that petunias can trap fungus gnats.

Verbena

Complete Guide to Flower Growing

Verbena has the same effect. Similar to petunias, verbena's branches and leaves also have many fine hairs. Once a fungus gnat gets stuck, it is very hard to escape.

After fungus gnats get stuck to the stems of petunias and verbena, they need to be cleaned off immediately, otherwise over time the dead fungus gnats may harm the flowers.

However, relying solely on petunias and verbena to deal with fungus gnats is far from enough. Today, Huahua has specially put together a few little tricks for everyone, so hurry up and learn them with Huahua!

Lure and Trap Method

Complete Guide to Flower Growing

Fungus gnats have a tendency to be attracted to yellow, so we can use yellow objects around us to make a powerful tool for trapping and killing fungus gnats.

Cooking Oil Lure

1. Prepare a bowl of cooking oil and a yellow plastic plate.

2. Pour the cooking oil evenly onto the plastic plate and place it next to the flower pot. The next day you will find that quite a few fungus gnats are stuck to the plastic plate.

Detergent Trap

1. Prepare a large yellow basin, pour in some clean water, add an appropriate amount of washing powder or dish soap, and stir well. Place the flower pot in a small basin, then put it into the yellow basin.

2. The next day you will find that the water is covered with fungus gnats.

Yellow Sticky Board Lure

1. If you find the above two methods troublesome, you can directly buy a yellow sticky board and place it around the flowers.

2. After a day or two, the sticky board will be covered with fungus gnats.

Pesticide Spray Method

In most cases, the lure methods can only kill the majority of fungus gnats, but cannot completely eradicate them. To thoroughly kill fungus gnats, you still need to use certain pesticides.

Lanju Water

1. Prepare 500ml of clean water, spray Lanju insecticide into the water ten times, mix well and shake evenly. Then spray it on the soil surface, the outer wall of the flower pot and the tray, spraying once every 3-5 days.

2. When spraying, do not spray it on the plants. If you are worried that spraying into the soil will affect the plants, you can spray only in the tray, but you need to increase the dosage.

Sulfur

1. Mixing a small amount of sulfur powder into the soil can inhibit fungus gnats from laying eggs in the soil. However, sulfur powder is somewhat harmful, so wear gloves when using it.

2. If you don't have sulfur powder at home, you can substitute it with sulfur soap. Cut off a small piece of sulfur soap, mix it with water, and pour it into the flower soil. However, sulfur soap is alkaline, so do not use it frequently.
