Azaleas like a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment. Normally I keep my azaleas outdoors in a semi-shaded spot, and they grow very vigorously. When we grow azaleas indoors, we can put them on a balcony, in a place with good ventilation and light, but do not expose them to blazing sun. Five or six hours of light a day is enough to meet the azalea's needs

If the ventilation is good, you can mist the azalea's leaves to keep the surrounding air humid. Azalea leaves have a layer of fine fuzz, so if the ventilation is poor and you mist them, the water cannot evaporate, which causes yellowing leaves and leaf rot

The soil for azaleas must be loose and airy, because azalea roots are very fine hair-like roots with no main taproot, so loose, airy soil is what allows the roots to breathe. I have grown azaleas for several years now, always keeping them outdoors in a semi-shaded spot together with lots of other flowers and plants. Normally the ground soil is fairly moist too, so the azaleas grow very vigorously and every year bloom in layer upon layer

And I also root lots of small azalea seedlings every year. After the azaleas finish blooming, when I prune off the spent flowers, two small side shoots sprout next to each spent flower. When those small side shoots grow to the semi-lignified stage, they are ready for cuttings

When I take cuttings, I directly use leaf mold soil and large-grained river sand, then mix in some original soil. This kind of soil is very loose, airy and nutritious.

Whether for growing azaleas or for rooting cuttings, it works very well. Then, water the soil thoroughly, put a plastic bag over the top, poke a few holes in the bag for ventilation, and every four or five days open it up to let in air, water thoroughly, then cover it again the same way. In about a month, the azaleas will have rooted and grown new leaves, and can be transplanted out. Every year I use these methods to grow lots of azaleas.
