The Importance of Antioxidants

As people's living standards rise, they pay more and more attention to health. The word "antioxidant" is mentioned frequently, but do you really understand it?

So-called antioxidant actually means scavenging free radicals in the body. Because the human body is in constant contact with the outside world, including breathing (oxidation reactions), external pollution, radiation exposure and other factors, free radicals are continuously produced in the body.

Smoking, air pollution, water pollution, radiation, pesticides, high life stress, excessive exercise and so on - these conditions that increase free radical concentration are called oxidative stress. The greater the oxidative stress, the higher the concentration of free radicals in the body.

The human body's antioxidant substances are partly synthesized by the body itself and partly supplied by food. However, with social development, there are more and more factors in life that increase free radical concentration in the body, and the body's own antioxidant system faces a crisis of being insufficient. At this point, we usually need to rely on external food to provide antioxidants.

More and more research shows that antioxidation is an important step in preventing aging and many health problems. If excess oxidative free radicals can be eliminated, many free-radical-induced and aging-related diseases can be prevented.

When it comes to antioxidation and anti-aging, tea lovers will think of the luxury brand Chanel's Chanel No. 10 lotion, developed and launched for naturally or temporarily sensitive skin.

The Secret of Chanel No. 10 Lotion and Baihao Yinzhen

Chanel No. 10 Lotion

For Chanel, the birth of every skincare product is a long and precise journey of research and development. As a perfect work targeting sensitive skin, how was No. 10 lotion born? Why is it called No. 10? And why choose Baihao Yinzhen as the product's core formula ingredient? The video below reveals it all one by one.

How to obtain excellent skincare with good results and safety at the same time? For this, CHRISTIAN MAHé, Senior Vice President of Chanel's Research and Technology Department, collaborated with American dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler four years ago.

Dr. Amy Wechsler said that every day patients ask whether a product can be recommended for sensitive skin, and at that time she did not know what product to recommend that could truly soothe their skin. Some people have naturally sensitive skin, some have temporary sensitivity caused by excessive stress, and the surrounding environment is also a major factor.

How to solve it? Targeted products are needed! What should this kind of skincare look like? What ingredients should it have? For people with sensitive skin, the large number of chemical ingredients in skincare can cause problems. So Dr. Amy Wechsler thought of tea!

Their team came to Fuding, Fujian, China, and found white tea, and found Baihao Yinzhen.

They discovered that Baihao Yinzhen's antioxidant components are very high.

They wanted to create a product with only 10 ingredients. Vice President CHRISTIAN MAHé said this was a very difficult and major task, so they could only keep trying and experimenting.

They received many samples. Some formulas did not moisturize long enough, some formulas had poor soothing effects... So they tried 117 different formulas and finally found a perfect combination of 10 ingredients that complement each other.

Baihao Yinzhen (Baekho Silver Needle) is the rarest and most precious variety of white tea. The product research department used tender leaf buds from the Fuding area of China as raw material, followed traditional ancient methods, used pure hand-picking and pure natural sun-drying, and then extracted active ingredients rich in theanine and polyphenols. In vitro tests showed that Baihao Yinzhen extract has soothing, calming and strengthening effects on the skin.

1 Soothing: regulates the production of nerve growth factor (NGF synthesis reduced by 75%), restoring sensory perception.

2 Calming and soothing: blocks free radicals, protecting the skin from oxidative stress.

3 Strengthening: promotes three key proteins that affect keratinocyte differentiation (keratin, filaggrin, loricrin), consolidating the skin barrier function.

So what is the scientific analysis of white tea's antioxidant activity?

Researcher Lin Zhi of the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted preliminary exploration of white tea's antioxidant activity, laying a good foundation for subsequent in-depth research.

The experiment mainly used four methods to test white tea's antioxidant activity: the ferric ion reducing method (FRAP method), DPPH free radical scavenging activity, APTS free radical scavenging activity, and oxygen free radical scavenging activity.

Research Summary

1 Overall, Baihao Yinzhen's antioxidant activity is significantly higher than that of Bai Mudan and Shoumei, while there is no significant difference between Bai Mudan and Shoumei.

2 There is no significant difference in antioxidant activity among Baihao Yinzhen, Bai Mudan and Shoumei from different years.

What is the relationship between the mass concentration of the main chemical components in white tea infusion and its antioxidant activity?

The patterns of tea infusion differ from those of dry tea, which is related to the brewing process and method. However, certain patterns of antioxidant activity can still be derived from analysis of the infusion's components.

Research Summary

The antioxidant activity of white tea infusion has a certain correlation with total tea polyphenols, total catechins, total flavonoids and organic acid content.
