Although this summer isn't particularly hot, there has been a lot of heavy rain recently, but we can make some small ponds to match the mood. The "small ponds" here are made from mini flower pots and don't need much space - they can be kept on a balcony or windowsill.

The mini pond below is put together with a mix of various plants. The recommended plants here include: water lily (bowl lotus works too), water hyacinth, papyrus, water bamboo, floating heart, water lettuce, and so on.

If you choose to grow water lilies or bowl lotus, then you need plenty of light, otherwise don't blame this or that if they don't bloom (generally around 6 hours of sunlight per day is most suitable).

Now let's start preparing the materials.

1. Container selection:

You can choose a wooden barrel, a large water vat, a holeless ceramic pot, or even a concrete water trough, but it's best if it's 40-50 cm deep, with a diameter of 70-90 cm being ideal.

2. Soil selection:

Of course, it's heavy clay soil like pond mud or silt (you can buy a bag at a flower shop or online).

3. Drainage basket:

These plastic baskets allow roots to penetrate and get water, making them very suitable for aquatic plants. Aren't they just like regular baskets? Actually, these are bought according to the size specifications of the plants.

4. Aquatic fertilizer:

Plants need some fertilizer to grow, and of course a little bit of compound fertilizer can barely work too.

5. Gravel:

This is used to hold the plants in place and can also serve as decoration. Of course, you can't use crushed limestone, as that will change the alkalinity of the soil or water.

6. Aquatic plants:

Water lilies are a fairly common aquatic plant among flower enthusiasts. Which variety to choose is up to you. They usually bloom in the afternoon or at night. What's mentioned here is properly planting some aquatic plants like Carolina fanwort in the water to help clean the water and provide oxygen.

7. Floating plants

Water hyacinth is a common floating plant, suitable for providing shade for small fish, but if it spreads too much it can cause the fish to die, so when growing them in pots you also need to watch their reproduction rate.

8. Other plants

Other plants include papyrus, calla lily and the like, all commonly used in aquatic bonsai.

II. Introduction to the production steps

Step 1:

Choose a sunny spot (at least 6 hours of sunlight per day), fill the container with water. Aquatic plants need some fertility, so be sure to add granular fertilizer at the bottom of the pot, then add pond mud. (The container chosen here is 50 cm deep and 70 cm in diameter)

Step 2:

Use a drainage basket to plant the water lily

Step 3:

Add a gravel layer of about 3 cm

Step 4:

Slowly place the planted water lily below the water surface. Is this a bit different from the method you imagined?

Step 5:

Repeat the above steps to plant the papyrus as well, and place it in the water. The water must submerge the papyrus's pot, otherwise it will easily wither under direct sun.

Step 6:

Plant some water lettuce and just place it beside them.

Step 7:

In another basket, plant Carolina fanwort. This is used to produce oxygen. Whether to plant it or not is up to you.

Step 8:

Add more water to the pot so that the water lily's leaves float on the water surface. Slowly it will grow well. During the first week, don't put it out in direct sun; give it a little light, then gradually increase the light, and after that pay attention to removing weeds.

Remember to place your mini pond in a spot with plenty of light. It will need at least 6 hours of sunlight every day, so let it enjoy it to the fullest!
