- Rose growing series articles: No. 99
Yesterday Lanyao said that the rose series articles would conclude at article 100. Today is No. 99, and Lanyao will share with everyone a special technique for propagating roses that guarantees 100% survival and is much simpler than cuttings.
This method is air layering of roses!
When it comes to layering, many flower lovers may have heard of it, but when it comes to air layering, most flower lovers are probably still not very clear about it. Today Lanyao will teach you step by step how to use the air layering method to propagate new rose plants.
Before explaining the air layering method, everyone should first prepare the things needed for air layering.
Materials to prepare:
1. A small amount of dried sphagnum moss
2. One plastic bag
3. One utility knife
4. A length of string
Alright, just prepare the above 4 materials. Now please follow along with Lanyao to operate.
Air layering operation method:
Prepare the rose you want to layer. Whether it is potted or planted in the ground is fine. Lanyao chose a potted rose to demonstrate for everyone.
Determine the position for layering. It is generally below a bud point, so that after cutting it off and planting it later, the bud point can sprout strong shoots. To make the operation easier, remove the leaves at that bud point, and also prune off other leaves and branches that get in the way of the operation.
Make a ring cut 0.8-1 cm below the bud point. First make one ring cut at the top and one at the bottom, then slit the bark open from the middle, and the bark can be peeled off in a ring.
Be careful not to cut too deep, so as not to cut through the branch. The width of the ring cut should be 1.5-1.8 times the diameter of the branch. If the ring cut is too small, the wound heals too quickly and roots are less likely to grow.
Tie one end of the plastic bag below the cut so as to wrap the medium.
Take the soaked sphagnum moss, squeeze out the water, wrap it around the cut, then wrap it with the plastic bag and tie the top opening tightly. Note: use imported sphagnum moss, not domestic moss, otherwise water retention is too poor, and the moss dries out before roots grow. Replenishing water is rather troublesome, but if wrapped well with imported moss, it needs no care until rooting.
After wrapping, it looks like this. To speed up rooting, we wrap black tape around the outside of the plastic bag to create a light-blocking environment.
Alright, now it is all done. Next, just manage it normally and wait for roots to grow. If the layered branch has flowers, please prune them off to encourage more nutrients to flow back to the ring cut and promote root production.
Isn't it simple? With this method, even if roots do not grow, the rose branch will not die and can still grow and bloom. The picture above is an air layer Lanyao did before. Do you see the white roots? Hurry up and try it yourself!
Tomorrow I will bring everyone the grafting method for rose trees. If you do not want to miss it, hurry up and follow Lanyao's WeChat public account: Lanyao Garden (ilanyao). There are videos too!
