Gardening Encyclopedia

Home-grown lotuses are mainly of two kinds, water lilies and bowl lotuses, and they are very easy to tell apart: water lily leaves generally float on the water surface and have a V-shaped notch

Bowl lotuses are more like miniature lotus flowers, easily standing upright and reaching out of the water, with oval leaves

The flowering period of water lilies and bowl lotuses is June to September, right in the scorching heat. Just think about it - a touch of clear lotus under the blazing sun is truly refreshing!

How to grow lotuses

Gardening Encyclopedia

To be honest, compared with any herbaceous or woody flowers, lotuses are just too easy to grow. Huahua will teach you step by step how to plant them, and one time will get you hooked!

1. Distinguishing lotus seeds

The lotus seed is actually an old lotus seed. The head of the lotus seed has a small raised point, while the tail has no raised point

2. Peel off the shell at the head

Use tools such as nail clippers to peel off the hard shell on the head of the lotus seed

Peel it until it looks like the picture below, this way it sprouts faster and more easily!

3. Soak in water to sprout

Find a small bowl, fill it with clean water, and put it in a cool place (the temperature now is above 20 degrees)

After about three days you can see green sprouts. You can't resist picking it up to look - such a sense of accomplishment

Keep soaking in water, and in 5-7 days the sprout breaks out of the shell, and in 10 days it can grow to about 8 cm

During this period you can drip a little nutrient solution into the water to speed up the sprout's growth and development. After about 20 days, when small tender leaves spread out into an oval shape, it's time to prepare for potting

4. Planting and potting

Growing lotuses is generally half soil and half water. The soil ensures the lotus's nutritional needs, and the water ensures the moist environment the lotus needs

Just use ordinary, fairly sticky soil. First sun-dry it, then pour boiling water over it to sterilize and disinfect, and let it dry

Put the dried soil in the flower pot, bury the seed, at a depth of about 3-5 cm

If the soil is not sticky enough and easily disperses in water, you can cover the soil surface with a layer of sand. It's best to also rinse the sand with boiling water or carbendazim to sterilize it

Pour in clean water, with a water depth of about 5-7 cm. Cloudiness is normal

After settling for 2-3 hours it will be much better

5. Daily care

Light:

Lotuses love light. Sufficient light ensures the growing temperature, so there's no fear no matter how much you sun them

Water amount:

During the seedling stage the water depth is 5-7 cm, ensuring the seedling can breathe. As the lotus grows, slowly increase the water, and for mature plants maintain a depth of 8-12 cm

Fertilizing:

Compared with other flowers, lotuses have low fertilizer requirements. Before flowering, just add some crushed peanut shells to the soil

Alright~

Isn't growing lotuses super simple?

Flower lovers, start growing them now

Enjoy admiring lotuses in summer~
