In the process of growing flowers, friends often fail to understand plants' habits and do not know how to grow them well. Take the Christmas cactus, for example: they do not even know whether it can take sunlight.

Of course the Christmas cactus needs sunlight, but this sunlight comes with certain conditions. It cannot take strong light exposure and must be shaded in summer. Only then can it safely pass through its dormant period and bloom profusely.

The Christmas cactus is a short-day flowering plant. It is best not to expose it to strong light. You can place it somewhere that receives five or six hours of light per day. This kind of light is exactly what the Christmas cactus likes very much.

My Christmas cactus and false Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) are both placed by the indoor balcony, where they can get about six hours of light per day, and they grow very vigorously.

However, in summer, the Christmas cactus enters a semi-dormant state. Its root system is very weak, and its demand for water and nutrients decreases. At this time, we need to shade it, otherwise the leaves are easily sunburned. Place it in a spot with scattered light or in a shaded, ventilated place. Keep the potting soil slightly moist: water thoroughly once it has dried out, let it dry to half-dry quickly in a ventilated place, then put it back in a shaded, ventilated spot for care. This way it can safely pass through the dormant period.

In autumn, when the weather turns cool and the leaves start growing again, you can resume normal fertilizing, watering and sun exposure.
