Growing orchids on a balcony: learn these 5 tips, and a full pot of blooms is not a dream!

Orchids are becoming more and more popular. Especially for city dwellers, caring for orchids in a limited space makes choosing where to grow them quite difficult. So, a residential balcony in the city is the only choice of location for growing orchids at home.

However, a home balcony is the most suitable place for city dwellers. To grow orchids on a balcony, you must learn these few tips. If you can master these few key points, a full pot of blooms is not a dream!

Tip one: control moisture. Controlling moisture is very important for growing orchids well. Water thoroughly each time, and in winter watering once about every 10 days is enough; the specific watering frequency depends on the growing season, the growing environment, the soil's water permeability, and the size of the pot. Note that when watering orchids you should follow the principle of rather dry than wet, to prevent root rot and disease.

Tip two: fertilize lightly. For orchids, too much fertilizer easily causes fertilizer burn, scorching roots and leaves, and in severe cases can even lead to the death of the plant. In winter no fertilizer needs to be applied; in other seasons, when fertilizing, just choose an organic fertilizer with a lower concentration.

Tip three: ensure suitable temperature and humidity. The best growing temperature for orchids is 18-30°C; below 5°C or above 35°C will cause the plant to grow slowly. In winter the outdoor temperature is relatively low, so varieties like Cymbidium sinense and Cymbidium ensifolium can be moved indoors or to a sheltered spot, and certain insulation measures should be taken.

Tip four: choose good soil. Orchids like to grow in an environment that is sunny, well ventilated and not waterlogged, so the choice of soil is very important. Generally, when mixing soil you should follow the principles of good aeration, looseness and good water permeability. You can break red bricks into granular pieces and mix them with ordinary soil at a ratio of 7:3, then add a little charcoal; or buy special orchid soil from a flower and bird market for planting. At the bottom of the flower pot you can put a few crushed stones to help enhance air permeability.

Tip five: repot regularly. Orchids like to grow in clumps, and generally 3-5 shoots per pot is appropriate. Generally, repotting once every three years is better for the growth of orchids.
