Growing Gardenias in Summer: A Few Measures for Fragrant, Abundant Blooms

Gardenia jasminoides has glossy green leaves and fragrant flowers, making it a very popular ornamental plant. It also has strict environmental requirements, making it especially suitable for cultivation in southern China. As a summer flowering plant, gardenias need just a few care measures to bloom with fragrance filling the air.
1. Care Location
For potted gardenias, gardeners can place them on east-facing, south-facing, or west-facing balconies for management, with east-facing and west-facing balconies giving the best cultivation results. On south-facing balconies, avoid spots with excessively strong sunlight. Because of its moderate height, it can be placed on balconies of various sizes.
During the vigorous growth stage, place the plant where it receives no less than 2 hours of direct sunlight per day. In summer, keep the environment well ventilated. Slightly low winter temperatures do no harm.
2. Potting Soil Configuration
Potted gardenias should be planted in well-drained, loose, fertile, acidic soil. If conditions permit, the potting soil can be made from leaf mold, fine sand, and garden soil at a volume ratio of 1:2. Gardenia plants are moderate in height and slow-growing, so a medium-sized flower pot is usually chosen for planting.
Gardenias prefer a moist soil environment and cannot tolerate drought, especially during the vigorous growth period when an adequate water supply should be ensured, so that the potting soil is often kept in a slightly moist, tending-toward-dry state.
3. Frequent Fertilization
Gardenias have a relatively high demand for fertilizer. In addition to applying about 20 g of horse hoof pieces and the like as a base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot when planting, during the vigorous growth stage a dilute general-purpose liquid flower fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium should be applied once every 10 days.
During the rainy season, since applying liquid fertilizer is inconvenient, you can switch to granular chicken manure fertilizer at about 5 g per pot, scattered on the surface of the potting soil away from the main trunk, otherwise it can easily "burn" the stem. Only with sufficient fertilizer can the plant send out new branches and develop glossy green leaves.
Gardenia jasminoides enjoys an environment with ample light and is also fairly shade-tolerant. During the high-temperature period in summer and autumn, especially at noon, provide shade, otherwise it is unfavorable to its growth. The environment should be kept properly ventilated. Gardenias like warmth and are slightly cold-tolerant, growing well within a temperature range of 16-28°C. The overwintering temperature should not be lower than 5°C.
Gardenia is a perennial plant with relatively slow growth and a long lifespan. Its best ornamental period can last 5-8 years after the seedlings are planted. Without repotting, continuous cultivation should not exceed 2 years.
