How to prevent hollow orchid roots? These practical tips you need to master

Orchid growers often encounter a situation during repotting and changing pots where the orchid roots look clean and intact on the surface but are hollow inside. This phenomenon is commonly called hollow orchid roots. The root cause of hollow orchid roots is water loss caused by the orchid roots being in a dry environment for a long time. To prevent hollow roots in orchid plants, you must treat the cause specifically. Specifically, there are two measures.
1. Water thoroughly and avoid "half-watering." Watering orchids is a basic skill in orchid growing and also a difficult problem that is not easy to master. As the saying goes, "It takes three years of practice to learn how to water orchids," which shows the importance of watering. The so-called "half-watering" means watering only the upper half, referring to the upper part of the orchid pot's growing medium being moderately moist while the lower part is dry. This is the crux of the problem that causes hollow orchid roots. There are two ways to prevent this phenomenon: First, when watering orchids, water repeatedly several times, and do not stop watering just because you see water flowing out of the bottom of the orchid pot. Because some orchid growing media have large particle sizes and large gaps, as long as you water the orchid slightly, water will flow out of the bottom of the pot, while the inner growing medium is still dry. Therefore, when watering, water repeatedly several times to ensure the growing medium is thoroughly watered and moist. Second, use the "sit-pot" (soaking pot) method of watering, that is, place the orchid pot in a container filled with water so that the height of the pot soil surface is basically level with the water surface in the container, allowing water to slowly rise from the bottom of the pot to fully moisten the growing medium. This watering method is the most even and thorough, but in summer, try to use this method as little as possible or not at all to avoid mutual transmission of pathogens.
2. The growing medium must be mixed evenly to ensure that the orchid growing medium and orchid roots are fully in contact and fit closely. An ancient manual says, "If one root does not touch the soil, that root will become hollow." This is indeed the talk of experience. Practice has proved that if the pot soil and orchid roots are not in sufficient contact, over time the orchid roots will be suspended and lose water, and hollow roots will definitely appear. Based on this, orchid growers are required to mix the growing medium thoroughly when planting orchids, adding it in order of large, medium, and small particles. Each time a layer of growing medium is added, gently pat the pot wall so that the pot soil and orchid roots are fully in contact. After potting, use the "sit-pot" (soaking pot) method to water thoroughly; further increase the contact surface between orchid roots and growing medium, and then bring it into daily management. If managed properly, hollow orchid roots can be effectively avoided.
3. The growing medium is not breathable, causing orchid roots to rot and then become hollow. Most orchid enthusiasts, when they first come into contact with orchids, like to use pure soil to plant orchids and cannot break through the concept of soil. We all know that orchid roots are aerial roots and need good breathability to grow well. A humid environment easily causes root rot. When we use horticultural soil for planting, because horticultural soil is too fine, it easily compacts and does not drain easily. After watering, it remains wet for several days. Over time, this causes orchid roots to accumulate water and rot, resulting in hollow roots. Therefore, when planting orchids, we should use granular growing media with stable properties, so that breathability is good and root rot is not easy to occur, and orchids will naturally be grown well.
