How to grow and care for Croton hydroponically?

Croton, also known as garden croton. The leaf shapes and colors of croton are highly variable, and even the same plant can change depending on its growth stage, so it can be described as one leaf with many forms and one leaf with many colors, making it highly ornamental (figure). Croton is an evergreen shrub. It grows 1-2 m tall and is much branched. The leaves are simple, alternate, and thickly leathery. Leaf shape, size, and color vary greatly. The leaves may be elliptical, ovate, linear, lanceolate, etc., with entire or lobed margins; flat, wavy, or spirally twisted. Leaf colors include yellow, purple, green, red, white, and others. The leaf surface has spots, blotches, or stripes.

1. Hydroponic method

(1) For hydroponic croton, you can choose a mature small soil-grown plant, wash the roots clean using the root-washing method, and then plant it in a container.

(2) Because croton has bright colors, when choosing a container, crystal-clear glassware and traditional craft pots are best, and the diameter should preferably be about 1/5 of the plant height.

(3) Since croton roots are not drought-tolerant, water can be added to 1/2-2/3 of the root system, and water roots can grow in 20-30 days.

2. Care guide

(1) Temperature and light The suitable temperature for croton growth is 20-30°C. In winter, the temperature should be above 13°C; below 5°C, frost damage will occur. Croton likes light. Except for slight shading needed in summer and autumn, it can receive full sunlight at other times.

(2) Water changes In the early stage of hydroponic croton, change the water once every 2-3 days. After water roots grow, changing the water once every 15-20 days is sufficient.

(3) Fertilization Add nutrient solution when changing the water for hydroponic croton. Croton does not have a high fertilizer requirement. If it is found to grow slowly, the nutrient solution concentration can be reduced, and the nutrient solution replacement interval can be extended to 30 days. If the color of the nutrient solution is found to change, it should be replaced immediately to avoid affecting the ornamental effect.

(4) Pest and disease control Hydroponic croton may occasionally develop scale insect damage and red spider mite damage. If infection is found, they can be removed by hand-picking.
