Recently, the outdoor temperature in our Binchuan has reached as high as 31--33°C, which is no small test for me growing succulents on the rooftop.
At the end of October 2016, I moved my succulents to the rooftop. The succulents grew more beautiful every day. The good ventilation and the temperature difference between morning and evening made the succulents color up quickly. After getting a taste of the benefits, in the early summer of 2017 I began moving a large number of succulents to the rooftop. Worried that some succulents would not adapt to the rooftop, I made full preparations for protection. During the Qingming Festival holiday I put up a shade net, and during the May Day holiday I made a simple display rack (wire mesh bought from the wholesale market, with packaging-box wooden strips collected by my parents nailed around the sides, and bricks placed under the four corners, and the simple display stand was done, which can enhance the breathability of the pot bottoms).
Binchuan is located in the dry-hot zone of the Jinsha River basin, and every summer is spent sweating it out. Perhaps it was heaven's favor to me, but the summer of 2017 had considerably more rainfall than usual, and together with the effect of the shade net and the display stand, the originally scorching summer passed easily.
After autumn arrived, I moved all the big ones to the rooftop. One night, a fierce storm broke the ropes of the shade net, the shade net collapsed, and swept all the flower pots down. Listening to the crackling sound of the flower pots falling, I could not sleep steadily all night, anxious about exactly how much had been lost. The next day, gasping for breath as I climbed the stairs, I looked at the fallen flower pots, the broken leaves, the old-stem branches mixed with top dressing stones and soil scattered in the rainwater in complete disorder, and my heart ached so much.
Since the rooftop originally had only a solar water heater and a water tower, fixing points were difficult, and long lines were needed to secure the shade net well. The wind and rain on ordinary days had already made the ropes fragile, and long-distance lines could not play a stabilizing role. Strong winds increased the swinging arc and then tore the shade net, and disaster struck. With last year's heavy losses, this year I had no intention of putting up a shade net, afraid of being hit again. Unexpectedly, such a decision actually trained out the beauty of my precious succulents.

Aeonium 'Copper Kettle', round-leaf black Aeonium, small-leaf black Aeonium, Aeonium 'Voodoo', Aeonium 'Medusa', green Aeonium, the colors are even more intense.
The beautiful Aeonium 'Copper Kettle', made from two small single heads put together.
The round-leaf black Aeonium raised from a young plant, three small single heads forming one pot, it should be time to move to a bigger home.
Black Aeonium, bought last summer, settled into the pot quickly and grew fast too.
Small-leaf black Aeonium, purely another name used by sellers for profit.

Green Aeonium, red flowers need green leaves to set them off, placing it among them achieved the expected contrasting effect.
String of coins, I love string of coins so deeply that I have raised countless pots, and each pot has its own shape and color.
Aeonium 'Sunburst' raised for three years, I hope flowering will not affect it much. I heard that Aeonium dies after flowering, and since I had never seen it, I took the risk and tried it. After recording it well, I will immediately cut off the flowers.
Under strong light it is incomparably gorgeous, and at sunset it also shows its full splendor.
With so many pictures, it is inconvenient for Encyclopedia Jun to review, but I still could not hold back and added the adorable bear paws, I love the chubby furry hands too much.
In the scorching summer, as long as ventilation is maintained, succulents will not easily die. To help the succulents increase ventilation, I put a lot of thought into it. The most useful thing is still the water-separating steaming rack sold in supermarkets, 3.8 yuan each. I bought ten in one go, and the cashier's face was full of question marks. Later I changed to buying two or three at a time over several trips to reduce the embarrassment. For flower pots whose bottoms do not have feet, I placed one under each to increase the pot's breathability. Sharp-eyed succulent friends have already noticed it in my string of coins post; this method works well and is economical too.
Thanks to Encyclopedia Jun for the hard work of reviewing manuscripts in this scorching heat. Next time I will definitely watch the number of pictures. For the sake of the beautiful pictures, sweat a little more. Thank you!
