Some plant lovers are so lazy about growing plants that they cannot even be bothered to water them. So if you want to grow plants, you definitely need to grow some easy-care flowers, and they have to be beautiful too. That makes the jade plant (Crassula ovata) especially suitable as a potted plant at home.

The jade plant, also called douban palm, is a type of succulent. It has leaves that stay green all year round. The leaves are very thick and fleshy, and look adorable. It is extremely easy to care for and highly drought-tolerant, making it a lazy person's potted plant for the home.

Besides its green, fleshy leaves, a well-grown jade plant will produce small white flowers at the top, which are especially elegant and unique, beautiful and easy to grow.

Since the jade plant is a type of succulent, its leaves and stems have a strong water-storage capacity and usually hold plenty of moisture. Too much watering can instead easily cause root rot and yellow leaves.

The jade plant normally does not need much attention, and it does not matter if you often forget to water it; in fact, it grows better that way. To keep its shape full, watering should not be excessive. The watering principle is to prefer dry over wet: water thoroughly when dry, and it is better for the potting soil to stay on the dry side most of the time.

What does "water thoroughly when dry" mean?

It means that when we water the jade plant, we should first check whether its potting soil is especially dry. If the soil can be squeezed into a ball, it is not dry enough yet, and there is no need to water at this point.

If it cannot be squeezed into a ball, that means it is very dry, and then it is time to water it. When you water, water it thoroughly, and water again only after it has dried out completely next time.

On the contrary, a jade plant kept at home needs basically no care apart from watering it when you remember, and it can be grown for years with hardly any effort. Its leaves will even grow roots when they fall into the soil. It is just so easy to grow, so do not miss it when choosing potted plants for your home!
